How I Could Just Kill A Man
Rage Against the Machine Lyrics

Hey, don't miss out on what you're passing
You're missing the hootah of the funky Buddah
Eluder of the fucked up style's that get wicked
So come on as I start to kick it
Cause we're like outlaws striding while suckers are hiding
Jump behind the bush when you see me driving by'
Hanging out my window, and my magnum taking out some putos
Acting kind of loco, I'm just another local
Kid from the street getting paid for my vocals
Here is something you can't understand
How I could just kill a man

Here is something you can't understand
How I could just kill a man
Here is something you can't understand
How I could just kill a man
Here is something you can't understand
How I could just kill a man
Here is something you can't understand

I be doing all the dumb shit yo
'Cause nothing is coming from it
I'm not gonna waste no time fucking around, I got ya humming
Humming coming at ya, then you know I had to gat ya
Time for some action just a fraction of friction
I got the clearance to run the interference
Into your satellite, shining a battle light
Swing out the gat and I know that we'll gat you right
Here's an example, just a little sample
How could I just kill a man
One time tried to come in my home take my chrome
I said, "Yo, it's on, take cover son or you're assed out
How do you like my chrome?" Then I watched the rookie pass out
Didn't have to blast him but I did anyway, young punk had to pay
So I just killed a man

Here is something you can't understand
How I could just kill a man
Here is something you can't understand
How I could just kill a man
Here is something you can't understand
How I could just kill a man
Here is something you can't understand
How I could just kill a man

It's gonna be a long time before I finish
One of the many missions that I have to establish
To light my spliff, ignite you with these sights, so if you ain't down
Bullshit, say some punk tried to get you for your auto
Would call the one time and play the role model?
No, I think you'll play like a thug
Next hear the shot of a magnum slug, humming coming at ya
Yeah, you know I'm going to gat ya, how do you know where I'm at
When you haven't been where I've been, understand where I'm coming from
While you're up on the hill in your big home
I'm out here risking my dome, just for the bucket or a fast ducket
Just to stay alive, yo I got to say fuck it
Here is something you can't understand, how I could just kill a man
Here is something you can't understand, how I could just kill a man

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "How I Could Just Kill A Man" by Rage Against the Machine are a direct and unapologetic critique of violence, particularly gang violence in urban neighborhoods. The song's lyrics describe the singer's experiences as a young man growing up in a violent environment and the difficult choices he had to make in order to survive. Through its use of vivid imagery and raw language, the song seeks to capture the brutality and hopelessness of life in urban America.

The opening lines of the song warn the listener not to "miss out on what you're passing" and to pay attention to the harsh realities of life. The singer then goes on to describe the violence and instability of his surroundings, contrasting his own outlaw status with the cowardly behavior of those who "jump behind the bush when you see me driving by." The chorus repeats the phrase "Here is something you can't understand/How I could just kill a man" to drive home the point that the singer's actions are motivated by a desperation born of the constant threat of violence.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics switch from describing the singer's own experiences to issuing a challenge to the listener. The lines "While you're up on the hill in your big home/I'm out here risking my dome" call attention to the privileges that many people enjoy and suggest that such privileges come at a high cost to those who must struggle to survive in the shadows of society.

Overall, "How I Could Just Kill A Man" is a powerful and unflinching portrait of life in urban America, warts and all.

I miss these dudes. The world in its current state shouldn't be without a band like this! 😔

@CHE113A

RATM
Reading Festival UK 24 August! 🤘🏼🇬🇧
Check dates! Zack is back! ✊🏼💞

@thatnimrod

The world in any state shouldn’t be without a band like this

@MLCrow

Why? RATM is just a commercial band in the end, the band members are full of money, they are part of the elite music industry, signed to big record companies (they are rich but they act like they're poor...hypocrisy)...they should rename the band to RWTM (Rage With The Machine). They are the opposite of what they're standing for in their music. You can't take them seriously. I'm just honest.

@TitaniusGames

@@MLCrow Braindead ass take to say so boldly. I don’t even know if you actually believe this or you’re just mad they have communist/socialist beliefs so you’re trolling. They’re elites because they got rich and famous off their own musical talents? They can’t help that they’re popular. But are they supposed to deny any money that ever comes to them and struggle to live/make more music so they can be more “authentic” to you? That’s ridiculous. It’s like those “communism is when no iPhone” memes. They didn’t exploit anyone for their money. They were born and forced to play this society and it’s economic ideologies. Like we all were (assuming you’re in America or any capitalist western country)

They don’t “act poor” because they continue to advocate for the poor and working class like they did when they actually were poor. And they aren’t hypocrites. If Zach and Tom went to a show and talked about what they talk about and then went off to chill in 50 room mansions with big ass private jets and yachts, I’d agree with you that they’re hypocrites. But there’s no evidence indicating they do that. They are still against materialism based on what we see and there are many stories of people seeing Zach ride around in a beat up pick up truck.

Making money off your own sweat and talents doesn’t make you a hypocrite if you’re keeping your same beliefs and not turning your back on ideologies like the rights of the working class, anti materialism, etc.

@MLCrow

@@TitaniusGames Dude, they were/are pushed/marketed from the very beginning by big (rich) record companies. Without them they would be without such fame or notoriety. We are not talking about small (not known) independent or underground labels they could pick if they wanted their albums out. They stand for communism (as it seems) but they are just part of the capitalistic system, a product to make big money in hands of such big companies we all "buy" so easily, making/signing big contracts for big money and fame...and you know it too unless you can't process it. Where/how do you think RATM members are spending their big money? I suppose they're spending a lot but they just keep low profiles....but the most important is: did or do they help the poorest ones with for example transparent donations or really help them with other activities if they really have such a "social touch" as you say? I mean concrete evidences of poor or oppressed people helped by RATM to improve their lives or living...not just by RATM singing (rapping) about it and making money out of it for themselves, music companies or let's say the capitalistic system etc...and with also expensive concert tickets now. Do you understand my point? It's a "paradox" in this case. It's kinda like being/speaking against drugs but working for a drug lord (if I can exaggerate with such a comparison). You can't take RATM messages seriously from that point of view, they're not credible (at least for me and I'm not the only one by far)...no matter if you like their music or not. I'm just real and honest.
