Wake Up
Rage Against the Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come on

Come on, although ya try to discredit
Ya still never read it
The needle, I'll thread it, radically poetic
Standin' with the fury that they had in '66
And like E-Double I'm Mad
Still knee-deep in the system's shit
Hoover, he was a body remover
I'll give you a dose but it can never come close
To the rage built up inside of me
Fist in the air, in the land of hypocrisy

Movements come and movements go
Leaders speak, movements cease
When their heads are flown
'Cause all these punks got bullets in their heads
Departments of police (what), the judges (what), the feds (the feds)
Networks at work, keeping people calm
You know they went after King when he spoke out on Vietnam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot

Yeah, yeah, back in this
With poetry my mind, I flex
Flip like Wilson, vocals never lackin' that finesse
What do I got to, what do I got to do to wake you up?
To shake you up, to break the structure up
'Cause blood still flows in the gutter
I'm like takin' photos, mad boy kicks open the shutter
Set the groove, then stick and move like I was Cassius
Rep the stutter step then bomb a left upon the fascists
Yeah, several federal men
Who pulled schemes on the dream and put it to an end
You better beware of retribution with mind war
Twenty-twenty visions and murals with metaphors
Networks at work, keepin' people calm
Ya know they murdered X and tried to blame it on Islam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot

What was the price on his head?
What was the price on his head?

I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard, I think I heard a shot

Black Nationalism, he may be a brave new contender for this position
Should he abandon his supposed obedience to white liberal doctrine
Of non-violence and embrace Black Nationalism
Through counter-intelligence it should be possible to
Pinpoint potential trouble-makers and neutralize them

Through counter-intelligence it should be possible to
Pinpoint potential trouble-makers and neutralize them
And neutralize them, and neutralize them, and neutralize them

Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up

How long? Not long
'Cause what you reap is what you sow

Overall Meaning

In Wake Up, Rage Against the Machine calls for a revolution against the corrupt system that oppresses people, drawing parallels between the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the continued struggles for justice that marginalized people face today. The lyrics criticize both the government and the media for perpetuating lies and keeping people in their place, while also pointing out the ways in which nonviolent movements can falter and leaders can be targeted. The song also references the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, suggesting that these leaders were killed because they were effectively challenging the power structures that kept marginalized people down.

The song is famous for its powerful lyrics, but it's worth noting that the music itself is just as impactful. With its driving bassline, thrashing guitar riffs, and insistent drumbeat, Wake Up is an assault on the senses that perfectly matches the anger and frustration of its lyrics. It's a protest song that doesn't just make you think; it makes you want to move, to shout, to fight back. Rage Against the Machine has always been a band that encourages people to take action, and Wake Up is one of their most potent examples of this.

If anyone else is having this song and the rest of the album interrupted by false content warnings about "self harm" please send a feedback report to youtube. I can't tell if the system is flagging the album art or if people are mobbing on this album to get it removed from the platform but it's super annoying to have youtube pause between songs on this amazing album to tell me about content thats not present.

@valyrian7076

its 100% because of the cover, its litereally the legendary monk setting himself on fire (self-harm). And yes its extremely annoying to be interrupted because of it.

The genius of using this song in The Matrix. You know, Rage against the machine, and wake up? Perfect combination.

@Drewcifffer

What if i told you waking up was part of the simulation?

@zachdalmaso2131

Too bad all the conspiracy theory-obsessed idiots like the QAnon cultists or Alex Jones'/Infowars' audience - granted, those 2 groups tend to intersect as many QAnon cultists are also Alex Jones/Infowars fanboys & girls & vice versa - also love telling people to "wake up" or "don't be like the rest of the sheeple," when interacting with people intelligent enough(doesn't take much intellect, either!) to recognize & point out the stupidity in their beliefs. It really waters down the meaning of the phrase "Wake up" when its been co-opted by the sub-70 IQ crowd who, in fact, need to wake up from the delusional beliefs they cling desperately to.
