DeVaughn's musical story began with his mother's vinyl collection. "I always loved music so I would sneak into her record collection when she wasn't around and play her stuff." DeVaughn's father, noted jazz musician Abdul Wadud was also an influence. DeVaughn knew at an early age that he would become an entertainer.
DeVaughn graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland; then headed to nearby Coppin State. It was the first day of college that changed the course of his life. "I saw a group of guys standing outside singing, Boyz II Men style," remembers DeVaughn. "I just went up there and started harmonizing with them. Before I knew what was going on, I was in a group, cutting class to write lyrics and record." After winning $2,000.00 in a talent show at Bar None, a Washington D.C. nightclub, DeVaughn decided to go for broke and invested all of his winnings into a CD burner. Several independent releases led to a showcase with Jive Records, and the career was on it's way.

In Raheem DeVaughn's song Love Drug, he describes his love for someone in the most addictive way possible - as a drug. The opening lines of “I'm a lovaholic for you, plus the fact that my love is dope” sets the tone of the song. He goes on by saying, “You got me hooked, I got you sprung, now add it up, and you're my Love Drug.” Here, Raheem is saying that his love is so strong that it has become an addiction. He is hooked on his beloved, and his beloved is sprung on him. They are each other's drugs; they provide the high that each other needs to function.
DeVaughn further explains the concept of his love being a drug, by saying, “And you just got high when we lip lock so you search for me with a flashlight in the daylight cause I'm your get-right. So no one serves you up girl like I can, I'm your Mr. Midnight pusher man”. Here he talks about how kissing them feels like getting high and they are so addicted to it, they search for each other with a flashlight even during the day. Raheem is their get-right, who provides them with the feeling they need, and he is their pusher man.
Towards the end of the song, Raheem sings, “See you're back for more, and I'm re-ing up, you're floating now, that's that good stuff, and that's all day and all night.” Here he is saying that his beloved is back for more of him, and he is re-ing up, which means to reinvest in his supply. In other words, he is replenishing himself to give them what they need. He then sings, “I can't give her up,” which shows that even though he knows the implications of his love being a drug, he is addicted to it as well and cannot give it up.
