In its earlier days, the band had duel vocals performed by De Marrais and Fischer; later, De Marrais would become the lead vocalist in the majority of their songs. The band's many tours and intimate live shows at venues such as Brooklyn's Northsix (now Music Hall of Williamsburg), Washington, D.C.'s The Black Cat, Bowery Ballroom in NYC, and Chapel Hill's Cat's Cradle helped to grow its fan base and fuel album sales.
On November 6, 2006, the band announced, through Pitchfork Media, that the December 16th show at New York City's Bowery Ballroom would be their last. They played one more show on December 17th at Northsix, which De Marrais referred to as "home" because it also served as the band's rehearsal space.
The band reformed in 2014 with a reunion show at Bowery Ballroom on December 31. Additional shows were added for February 14 and April 18, 2015 at Lincoln Hall in Chicago and Union Transfer in Philadelphia, respectively.
In 2017 the band released S/T, their first album in 11 years.
There Will Be No Night
Rainer Maria Lyrics

then we'll sleep tonight.
If we can't put things right,
then there will be no sleep tonight.
Glistening night-time,
there will be no time.
Stay with my tonight,
And if daylight breaks, we'll fix it
conscious of the wound.
Unashamed and glistening,
and understood we're good.
We'll sleep in dark past noon.
The lyrics to Rainer Maria's song "There Will Be No Night" are incredibly thought-provoking and carry a deep meaning. The song is about the consequences of not facing and addressing one's problems, and the importance of taking action in order to find peace and closure.
The first line, "If we put things right, then we'll sleep tonight", suggests that the singer is hopeful that they can resolve whatever issues are plaguing them, and therefore find the rest they so desperately need. However, as the lyrics progress, it becomes clear that this resolution is not a guarantee - "If we can't put things right, then there will be no sleep tonight" - and that the consequences of ignoring their troubles will be severe. The repetition of this line highlights the importance of acknowledging and resolving issues, and not simply ignoring them in hopes that they will go away.
The second verse, with the lines "Glistening night-time, there will be no time. Stay with me tonight, there will be no night" are a bit more abstract, but still carry the overall theme of the song. The "glistening night-time" could be interpreted as a metaphor for a situation that seems beautiful and serene on the surface, but is actually fraught with issues and problems underneath. The plea for someone to "stay with me tonight" suggests that the singer fears being alone with their troubles and desires someone to support and encourage them as they work to address their problems.
The final lines of the song suggest that once resolution has been achieved, true rest and peace can be found - "We'll sleep in dark past noon." It seems to imply that without the burden of their issues weighing them down, the singer can finally find the rest they so desperately need.
Overall, the lyrics to "There Will Be No Night" are incredibly poignant and thought-provoking. The importance of addressing problems head-on is a universal theme, and the imagery used throughout the song is both vivid and relatable.
