The Girl From The Hiring Fair
Ralph McTell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went down to the hiring fair for to sell my labour,
And I noticed a maid in the very next row and I hoped she'd be my neighbour.
Imagine then my delight when the farmer picked us both.
I spoke not a word in the cart to the farm, but my heart beat in my throat.

My lodging was dry and my master fair and I gave him full measure,
But my envy grew like the corn in the field for in his house was my treasure,
And I'd watch her carry water, or drive cows from the byre,
And the heat from the sun made the corn grow strong and with it my desire.

Well I'd see her in my dreaming and in my dreams caress
Her eyes, her lips and her dark brown hair, the curves beneath her dress.
But harvest time it came at last, so heavy was the task
That the women and the men worked side by side and I had her near at last,

And I swung harder with my scythe, few words between us passed,
And I cursed my tongue-tied youthfulness and I hoped that she'd hear my heart.
When all was safely gathered in and we sat down to rest
My trembling fingers touched her arm, and she placed them on her breast.

And then she turned to me as the sun went down and all my senses reeled,
As we lay there on the scented ground and the moon rose over the field.

She was safely gathered in my arms when from the barn
Drifted the sound of a violin and we hurried back to the farm,
And all were dancing in the lantern light and music filled the air,
And I thanked my stars for the harvest moon and the girl from the hiring fair.

Oh all were dancing in the lantern light and music filled the air,
And I thanked my stars for the harvest moon and the girl from the hiring fair.

Overall Meaning

Ralph McTell’s song The Girl From The Hiring Fair is a moving and poignant tale of a young man’s infatuation with a girl he meets at the hiring fair. The hiring fair is an event where farm labourers go to look for work, and in this particular instance, the singer is hoping to sell his labour. The opening lines describe how the young man seeing the girl is hopeful that he would get to work in the same farm as her. His wish is granted when the farmer picks them both, and the two end up working side by side, harvesting crops.

As the song progresses, we learn of the singer’s deepening infatuation with the girl, who he describes as his “treasure.” Despite working in the same farm, the singer frets about their social distance and is painfully aware of her every move. He is silent as they ride to the farm, but his “heart beats in [his] throat.”

The singer’s desire to be with the girl only grows stronger during the harvest season when they work together. His reticence to speak with her frustrates him immensely. As the harvest season comes to a close, the singer finally musters up the courage to touch her, and they end up sleeping together. The song’s sensual lyrics capture the emotional intensity of the young man’s experience.

The final verses bring the story to a close as the singer looks back on his memory of that summer. He recalls the sound of the fiddle coming from the barn, and how all the farmhands, including him and the girl, were dancing together in the lantern light. The song ends with the singer expressing his gratitude for the girl from the hiring fair who made that summer so memorable.

Ralph says there's a big difference between poetry and songwriting - but in as much as poetry is about imagery and rhythm the two come pretty close in this beautiful song. Essentially a happy song which ends with the successful harvest - "She was safely gathered in my arms..." - but I never fail to cry when I listen to this. One of our best songwriters ever.

Beautiful. His voice is ageless. I have been a fan since the 70s and this just takes me back.

HLT Vieira

The absolutely most romantic song ever written (and it is best sung by Ralph McTell).

At the age of 18 I bought your album 'Easy'. I put down my electric guitar and bought an acoustic.
It's been that way ever since!
Wonderful song, awesome delivery..
