Tresvant sang lead on many of the New Edition lead singles including "Candy Girl", "Cool It Now" and "If It Isn't Love". Tresvant led the group from 1983 to 1989.
Despite the success of groupmates Bobby Brown, Bell Biv DeVoe, and Johnny Gill, Tresvant was cautious about his own solo career. Signing to MCA Records, Tresvant let his apprehension be known in several interviews.
Nevertheless, well-known producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were confident in his abilities after having worked with him on the album Heart Break. They wrote the song "Sensitivity" for him which hit #1 on the R&B charts, #4 on the Hot 100 and it went gold. His self-titled album released shortly after in 1990 and went platinum as well, topping the R&B charts. The album scored two more hits with "Stone Cold Gentleman" reaching #3 on the R&B charts and "Do What I Gotta Do" which reached #2.
Tresvant appeared in the movie House Party 2 in 1991 and the play, "The Man Of Her Dreams" in 2002. In 1993, he released his second album, It's Goin' Down. The album gave Tresvant greater involvement as he produced many of the tracks himself. However, perhaps due to limited promotion, the album failed to perform commercially as well as the debut.
On September 18, 2004, he married Amber Serrano.
Ralph's third solo album, Rizz Wa Faire, was released March 7, 2006. The first single from the album was "My Homegirl".

Tormented by the thought, that I could lose a good thing
Not yet, I haven't completed my mission
Only wishing that you could be my only lover
Know how, a savant, guilty of the charge that I committed
Don't wanna be aquitted baby, just forgive all my sins
My heart is reaching out, after all I put you through
I need you more and more, oh yes I do
Can't you see, girl that I've changed
I'm begging to come back to you
My whole life has been rearranged
So tell me, tell me baby, what else can I do?
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh baby
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh honey
Don't cry, it feels too good to be sad
Just smile, it got a little emotional
Don't leave, don't resist this extacy
This love was meant to be, forever and ever
Can't you see, girl that I've changed
I'm begging to come back to you
My whole life has been rearranged
So tell me, tell me baby, what else can I do?
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh baby
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh honey
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh baby
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh honey
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh baby
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh honey
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh baby
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh honey
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh baby
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh honey
Last night, we made love just one more time
Was it wrong, was it right
Last night, it felt good to me, oh baby
The lyrics to Ralph Tresvant's song "Last Night" are about a man who has been waiting for the opportunity to reconcile with his lover, whom he fears losing. He admits to his mistakes and asks for forgiveness, and asserts that he has changed and re-arranged his life for the better. The song's chorus recounts a physical encounter the night before, expressing uncertainty about the moral implications of the act but emphasizing that it felt good to both parties.
The verses of the song are full of self-reproach and longing for the woman he has hurt. The singer is tortured by thoughts of losing the relationship, and accepts responsibility for the wrongdoing that led to their separation. He is willing to beg for forgiveness and change his ways to regain the trust of his lover. The repeated chorus, however, focuses more on the feelings of the moment and the sensations of the body, rather than any deeper emotional connections between the two people.
Overall, "Last Night" is a song about the complicated mix of desire and guilt that can accompany romantic relationships, particularly when one person has acted in a way that threatens the stability of the partnership. It suggests that physical intimacy can be both pleasurable and complicated, and that forgiveness and redemption are possible even after betrayal.
