Sold
Your number, sir? Thank you

Lot 665, ladies and gentlemen: a papier-mâché musical box
In the shape of a barrel-organ
Attached, the figure of a monkey in Persian robes, playing the cymbals
This item, discovered in the vaults of the theatre, still in working order
Showing here

May I start at twenty francs? Fifteen, then?
Fifteen I am bid
Twenty, sir? Thank you
Twenty? Twenty-five? Thank you, madam
Thirty, selling at thirty, then
Thirty once, twice
Sold for thirty francs to the Vicomte de Chagny
Thank you, sir

A collector's piece indeed, every detail exactly as she said
She often spoke of you, my friend
Your velvet lining, and your figurine of lead
Will you still play, when all the rest of us are dead?

Lot 666, then: a chandelier in pieces
Some of you may recall the strange affair of the Phantom of the Opera:
A mystery never fully explained
We are told, ladies and gentlemen, that this is the very chandelier
Which figures in the famous disaster
Our workshops have restored it and fitted up parts of it
With wiring for the new electric light so that we may get a hint of
What it may look like when reassembled

Perhaps we may frighten away the ghost of so many years ago
With a little illumination, gentlemen?

Overall Meaning

The song "Prologue" from the musical "The Phantom of the Opera" by Andrew Lloyd Webber sets the stage for the story to unfold by introducing the audience to the auction that is taking place at the Opera Populaire. The lyrics describe the auctioneer's announcement of the next item up for bid, Lot 665, which is a papier-mâché musical box in the shape of a barrel-organ with a monkey figurine dressed in Persian robes playing the cymbals. The item was discovered in the vaults of the theatre and is still in working order, making it a valuable collector's piece.

As the auction continues, Lot 666 is introduced as a chandelier in pieces, which the audience is informed was involved in the famous disaster associated with the Phantom of the Opera. The auctioneer suggests that illuminating the theatre with the newly installed electric lights might frighten away the ghost of the Phantom.

The lyrics of "Prologue" effectively set the tone for the eerie and mysterious story that is about to unfold. They also introduce important elements of the story, including the Phantom's influence on the opera house and the chandelier's significance. The auction serves as a reminder of the past and draws the audience into the history of the opera house, setting the stage for the events to come.

Things I love about this musical number:
0:46 Christine confesses her feelings first
1:01 Raoul's look of disbelief + currently processing this information
1:44 Raoul realizing "This girl is finally mine!"
2:30 Raoul kneels, Christine chooses to join him. Some other productions have Christine pull Raoul back up so he stands, but I prefer it the other way :)
3:11 [TARGET LOCKED]
3:55 YYYEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
3:56 The fact Hadley can pick up Sierra and spin her around :)
4:00 The giggle is contagious
4:13 Raoul adorably asking for another kiss :)

Fantastic Nonsense

@Mica Gonsang fam...he just...loves her so much???? Literally all he wants is for her to be happy and alive. Genuinely tragic that most of his Final Lair lines are hidden underneath the Erik/Christine harmonized argument because he's being legit strangled while saying lines like "for pity's sake, Christine say no! Don't throw your life away for my sake!" and "Why make her lie to you to save me?!” and "Christine, forgive me! Please forgive me! I did it all for you and all for nothing!”

Do you realize that he was asking her to let him die so she could be free? He was literally willing to be tortured/killed by an obsessive stalker so that Christine could be free and happy. It's the only REAL personal desire he shows in the whole musical: Christine alive, healthy, and happy. And like...his Big Duet with Christine backs this up!!! The only things he asks of her in the entire song is to love him ("love me, that's all I ask of you") and let him allow her to feel safe and free ("let me be your shelter"/"let me be your freedom"). This whole song is like....*chef's kiss* honestly.

He's basically just a genuinely sweet, thoughtful, loyal, protective man who would go to the ends of the earth for Christine and was willing to die so she wouldn't be trapped with Erik for the rest of her life. Also he makes her laugh and understands her deep grief over losing her father (because he knew Mr. Daae as well). That man? My god...*I* want to marry that man.

Meanwhile like....imagine genuinely wanting Christine to end up with the man who groomed her, stalked her, harrassed and manipulated her, kidnapped her on two separate occasions, killed two of her coworkers, was going to force her to marry him against her will, tried to kill her fiancé while guilt-tripping her into thinking it would be her own fault (“buy his freedom with your love! Refuse me and you send your lover to his death!”), tried to kill her (with the chandelier), and generally made her life a living hell for at least a year. Lol. Hard pass.

tl;dr: In "All I Ask of You," Christine tells Raoul that "all [she wants] is freedom/a world with no more night," implicitly rejecting Mr. "Music of the Night" and the terror he brings. Raoul, because he loves her, swears to give that to Christine as best as he is able and then spends the rest of the musical proving it, including being willing to sacrifice his own life so she can have both her freedom and a life without being trapped by the "night" (Erik)...unlike Erik, who terrorizes her and repeatedly tries to isolate her, manipulate her, and trap her in the darkness at the cost of both her physical and mental health (which of course she reveals to Raoul in "Twisted Every Way", because by that point she's very reasonably terrified of Erik and the long-term consequences of staying in a place where he has access to her).

[Raoul]
No more talk of darkness
Forget these wide-eyed fears
I'm here, nothing can harm you
My words will warm and calm you

Let me be your freedom
Let daylight dry your tears
I'm here, with you, beside you
To guard you and to guide you

[Christine]
Say you'll love me every waking moment
Turn my head with talk of summer time
Say you need me with you now and always
Promise me that all you say is true
That's all I ask of you

[Raoul]
Let me be your shelter
Let me be your light
You're safe, no one will find you
Your fears are far behind you

[Christine]
All I want is freedom
A world with no more night
And you, always beside me
To hold me and to hide me

[Raoul]
Then say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime
Let me lead you from your solitude
Say you need me with you here, beside you
Anywhere you go, let me go too
Christine, that's all I ask of you

[Christine]
Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime
Say the word and I will follow you
Share each day with me, each night, each morning
Say you love me

[Raoul]
You know I do

[Both]
Love me, that's all I ask of you.

Anywhere you go, let me go too
Love me, that's all I ask of you
