Alter Mann
Rammstein Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song "Alter Mann" by Rammstein tells a story of an old man who spends his days smoothing out the waves in the water with his fan. The singer of the song, a younger man, finds amusement in throwing stones and disrupting the smooth surface of the water, much to the sorrowful disapproval of the old man. As the song progresses, the singer becomes increasingly curious about the old man's strange behavior and his constant smoothing of the water. Eventually, the old man reveals the purpose behind his actions: the water is a mirror that reflects the truth of the world, and only by smoothing it out can one see the reality behind the myths and fairytales that surround us. The song ends with the singer calling out to the old man, seeking his enlightenment and hoping to find redemption.

The song is a meditation on the meaning of life and the quest for understanding. The old man represents a wise sage figure who has gained insight through his long years of experience, and his constant smoothing of the water symbolizes the tireless effort required to gain true understanding. The singer, meanwhile, represents the restless youth seeking answers to life's mysteries, but struggling to find meaning in a world of myths and half-truths. The song suggests that only through hard work and dedication can we hope to find the truth that lies beneath the surface of things.

Rammstein has tons and tons of great tracks. If you're only familiar with the big hits, you're missing out. This has been one of my favorite tracks for almost two decades.

Have always absolutely adored this song. Think it's really overlooked and underrated. It's one of my favourites from the Sehnsucht album.

@petermessenger501

this song is about a monk, the old man, who looks after people who are in the dual places, the places where knowledge is more misunderstood, where living beings have chosen to pit sex against love and become ignorant of the truth. He looks after these living beings, at midday when the day is dual, and the sun is most hot (the sun - symbolic of a type of positive sex pleasure - like being good to get sex pleasure), the water of the eyes he cools with a fan. Because he is a monk, he has died to his physical body and though his hand is in rigor mortis he will not let go under any condition, any pain, he just must tend to his brothers and sisters from his love, it says the words "every day". They have entered themself to deeply and they dont know about other beings anymore. They have gone into their souls, the water of the eyes, and it reflects themself back to themself. They dont see other beings through that water the same as they have at other times. There's a Tatu song "stars" where the lyrics are "water thats not yours or mine". They have soul contracts that these goddesses, women of' faith and grace it explains in the bible... And though they dont know", the goddesses know and care for them while they need/choose to take this path.
