Bachata is a genre of Latin American music that originated in the Dominican Republic in the first half of the 20th century with European, Indigenous and African musical elements.
The first recorded compositions of Bachata were done by Jose Manuel Calderon from the Dominican Republic. The predecessors of Bachata are Bolero and Son (and later, from the mid 1980s, Merengue). The original term used to name the genre was amargue ("bitterness", "bitter music", or "blues music"), until the rather ambiguous (and mood-neutral) term bachata became popular. The form of dance, bachata, also developed with the music.
The first Dominican bachatas were recorded immediately after the death of Trujillo, whose 30-year dictatorship was accompanied by censorship. José Manuel Calderón is credited as having recorded the first bachata singles: ("Borracho de amor" and "Que será de mi (Condena)") released on 45 rpm in 1961.
After Trujillo's death, the floodgates were opened: following Calderon's historic bachata debut came more recordings by the likes of Rodobaldo Duartes, Rafael Encarnacion, Ramoncito Cabrera El Chivo Sin Ley, Corey Perro, Antonio Gómez Sacero, Luis Segura, Louis Loizides, Eladio Romero Santos, Ramón Cordero, and many more. The 1960s saw the birth of the Dominican music industry and of the bachata music which would dominate it.
While the bachatas being recorded in the 1960s had a distinctly Dominican flavor, they were regarded at the time as a variant of bolero, as the term bachata, which originally referred to an informal rustic party, had not yet come into use. This term was first applied to the music by those seeking to disparage it. The higher echelons of Dominican society felt that bachata music was an expression of cultural backwardness, and a campaign ensued to brand bachata in this negative light.
La Causa De Mi Muerte

Porque anoche veo presente
Que porque te hayas ausente
De mi humilde corazón.
Tu me llenas de ilusión,
Cuánto yo diera por verte,
Pero por mi mala suerte
Y si tu a mi no me quieres
Va a ser causa de mi muerte.
Yo no hallara otra mujer
Que la quiera más que a ti
Y hoy te canto desde aquí
Porque tu eres mi placer.
Y te quisiera tener
A mi lado para siempre,
Pero por mi mala suerte
No gozo de tus placeres
Y si tu a mi no me quieres
Va a ser causa de mi muerte.
Negra del alma,
Va a ser causa de mi muerte
Tengo mi alma oprimida
Y no te puedo olvidar
Porque tu eres el rosal
Que me perfuma la vida.
Mi esperanza no es perdida
Mientras yo pueda tenerte
En mis brazos para hacerte
Más caricia encantadora
Pero si tu no me adoras
Va a ser causa de mi muerte
Negra del alma,
Va a ser causa de mi muerte
Verdad que sí
Va a ser causa de mi muerte
Ay corazón
Va a ser causa de mi muerte
Negra del alma
Va a ser causa de mi muerte
The lyrics of Ramon Cordero's "La Causa De Mi Muerte" explore the pain and suffering of a man who is deeply in love with a woman who has left him. He is consumed by sadness and loneliness, living in a state of desolation since she has gone. He longs for her return, expressing his desire to see her once again so he can feel the joy and excitement that only she can bring. However, he knows that she does not feel the same way about him and that her absence will be the cause of his death.
Despite this, he cannot forget about her because she is the one who infuses his life with hope and meaning. She is the rose that fills his life with fragrance, the one he cherishes above all else. He holds onto the hope that he will be able to hold her again someday and provide her with the love and affection she deserves. However, if his love is not reciprocated, he knows that his fate is sealed and he will die from the pain of unrequited love.
Throughout the song, Ramon's voice quavers with emotion as he pours out his heart, conveying the depth of his love and despair. The lyrics are simple yet powerful, evoking a sense of tragedy and heartbreak that is sure to resonate with anyone who has loved and lost.
