We're a Happy Family
Ramones Lyrics

We're a happy family, we're a happy family
We're a happy family, me, mom and daddy
We're a happy family, we're a happy family
We're a happy family, me, mom and daddy

Siting here in Queens
Eating refried beans
We're in all the magazines
Gulpin' down Thorazines
We ain't got no friends
Our troubles never end
No Christmas cards to send
Daddy likes men

Daddy's telling lies
Baby's eating flies
Mommy's on pills
Baby's got the chills
I'm friends with the President
I'm friends with the Pope
We're all making a fortune selling Daddy's dope

Siting here in Queens
Eating refried beans
We're in all the magazines
Gulpin' down Thorazines
We ain't got no friends
Our troubles never end
No Christmas cards to send
Daddy likes men

We're a happy family, we're a happy family
We're a happy family, me, mom and daddy
We're a happy family, we're a happy family
We're a happy family, me, mom and daddy

We're a happy family, we're a happy family
We're a happy family, me, mom and daddy
We're a happy family, we're a happy family
We're a happy family, me, mom and daddy

We're a happy family, we're a happy family
We're a happy family, me, mom and daddy

We're a happy family, we're a happy family
We're a happy family, me, mom and daddy

Overall Meaning

The Ramones' "We're a Happy Family" is a satirical look at the dysfunctionality of the typical American family. The first-half of the song repeats the phrase, "We're a happy family" in a somewhat monotone, robotic fashion, which seems to be a mockery of the 'perfect' image that some people strive to portray their families as having. The mention of being "in all the magazines" emphasizes this point, as it suggests that they are seeking external validation for their happiness, rather than finding it within themselves. The next few lines paint a picture of a family who is estranged from the rest of society and has issues that are considered taboo, such as the mention of the father's homosexuality. This contrasts with the initial image of a happy and perfect family.

The second-half of the song introduces even more absurdities, such as the baby eating flies and the mother being addicted to pills. The line, "We're all making a fortune selling Daddy's dope" adds to the theme of a family who is disconnected from society and heavily involved in criminal activities. The repetition of the phrase, "We're a happy family" throughout the song highlights the irony and sarcasm present in the lyrics. The song seems to be suggesting that the 'perfect' family image is unattainable and that it's better to accept and embrace the flaws and idiosyncrasies of one's family.

Mine too, Daddy doesn't like men last I checked. It is a great song about family chaos though.

I’ll never forget the first time I heard this record. Summer of ‘94. I was 13. My cousin made me a mix, side A was “Rocket to Russia”; side B was “Ramones Mania”. I was over the damn moon. No internet back then either, so the mystique behind bands and artists was still there. It’s strange how the Ramones did that. Your first thought was, “whoa, finally, a band just for me!” Up until then everything for me was GnR or the typical grunge stuff coming out at that time, which was okay, but it never hit me the way the Ramones did. Nothing could. Wish I could go back to those days. They were all still alive, too!

So you can only imagine what it sounded like to those of us who heard it when it came out, when pop radio consisted of disco, metal, and "mellow" southern California. We all desperately needed "a band just for me," and nobody needed it more than the Ramones themselves, which is why they formed a band.

Rocket to Russia is pretty damn good

Sitting here in Queens - proud to be one of the FIRST High School kids in Queens to own the first Ramones album. Everyone in my HS thought I was absolutely crazy for loving them.
