Rancid has had two lineup changes since its inception, with Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman being continuous members. Their current lineup consists of Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Freeman on bass and vocals, Lars Frederiksen on guitar and vocals, and Branden Steineckert on drums. The band was formed by Armstrong, Freeman, and former drummer Brett Reed, who left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Steineckert. This lineup recorded their first album, with Frederiksen joining the band on their subsequent tour.
To date, Rancid has released ten studio albums, one split album, one compilation, two extended plays, and a series of live online-only albums, and has been featured on a number of compilation albums. The band has sold over four million records worldwide, making it one of the most successful punk rock groups of all time. The band rose to fame in 1994 with its second studio album, Let's Go, featuring the single "Salvation". In the following year, Rancid released its highly successful album ...And Out Come the Wolves, which produced its best-known songs "Roots Radicals", "Ruby Soho", and "Time Bomb", and was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA, selling over one million copies in the United States alone. Its next six albums – Life Won't Wait (1998), Rancid (2000), Indestructible (2003), Let the Dominoes Fall (2009), ...Honor Is All We Know (2014) and Trouble Maker (2017) – were also critically acclaimed, though not as commercially successful as ...And Out Come the Wolves. The band released their tenth album, Tomorrow Never Comes, in June 2023.

7 Years Down
Rancid Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When I got no food or I got no shelter
It's a house where I can get away
For maybe three days
To get off the drink and stay off the haze
Who's the opposition I'm seven years down
The human spirit prevails
Woke up in the bushes 6:30 Tuesday morning
With a unopened Heineken a head that was burning
For seven years I walked the same path
Dreams of being loved was all I ever had
Who's the opposition I'm seven years down
The human spirit prevails
Yeah I'm down down down
The song "7 Years Down" by Rancid speaks about the struggles that the singer has gone through in his life. The singer is homeless and has nothing to his name, but he knows of a place where he can go to escape his troubles for a few days to stay off the drink and haze. The song speaks of the human spirit that prevails despite the opposition that the singer has faced. It is evident from the lyrics that the singer has faced much adversity in his life, but he is determined to continue on.
The song begins by painting a picture of the singer's life. He has no food or shelter, but he knows of a place where he can get away from it all for a couple of days. This house is where he can stay off the drink and haze and try to gain some clarity in his life. The next verse speaks of waking up in the bushes with an unopened Heineken and a burning head. This is a clear indication that the singer has a drinking problem and he is facing the consequences of his addiction. However, despite the struggles and adversities that he has gone through, the singer is determined to continue on. He walks the same path every day, dreaming of being loved, but he still keeps moving forward.
The chorus of the song is the most powerful part. The opposition that the singer is facing is ambiguous, but it is clear that he has been down for seven years. Despite this, he believes that the human spirit will prevail. It's a message of hope for those who are struggling with their own challenges. The song speaks to the resilience of the human spirit and the determination to continue on despite the struggles.
