Rancid has had two lineup changes since its inception, with Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman being continuous members. Their current lineup consists of Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Freeman on bass and vocals, Lars Frederiksen on guitar and vocals, and Branden Steineckert on drums. The band was formed by Armstrong, Freeman, and former drummer Brett Reed, who left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Steineckert. This lineup recorded their first album, with Frederiksen joining the band on their subsequent tour.
To date, Rancid has released ten studio albums, one split album, one compilation, two extended plays, and a series of live online-only albums, and has been featured on a number of compilation albums. The band has sold over four million records worldwide, making it one of the most successful punk rock groups of all time. The band rose to fame in 1994 with its second studio album, Let's Go, featuring the single "Salvation". In the following year, Rancid released its highly successful album ...And Out Come the Wolves, which produced its best-known songs "Roots Radicals", "Ruby Soho", and "Time Bomb", and was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA, selling over one million copies in the United States alone. Its next six albums – Life Won't Wait (1998), Rancid (2000), Indestructible (2003), Let the Dominoes Fall (2009), ...Honor Is All We Know (2014) and Trouble Maker (2017) – were also critically acclaimed, though not as commercially successful as ...And Out Come the Wolves. The band released their tenth album, Tomorrow Never Comes, in June 2023.

Rancid Lyrics

They were sure I was guilty, but I committed no crime
They said: confessions bring lenience, so that put me on the line
So I, protest the massacres at the Talliman Square
My friends say yo, stay away man, you better not go fucking back there
Oh.
Watch this
One night I might write about my opinions about the state
And the, military secrets that I never did steal
I didn't start no violence, no, and there was nobody that I killed
No.
So I had a clear account of all abusers of power
And the memories of homeland all gone sour
And I only got one weapon, it's so plain for me to see
My only weapon I call, poetry
And I don't even know why
The truth seems like a lie
In my cell there is no sky
When I was arrested in Shanghai
Now, in a world of privilege I was not born
But, the devotion of freedom and liberty I was sworn
So, every emotion is studied, watched their control
Who gets paid, who gets disciplined, who gets born
So, transmitting beams my coordinates, anywhere on Earth
And, as radio waves, surveillance, satellite bursts
Open up your skull and let some knowledge come in
Yeah, crack open the cranium and let awareness begin
Oh.
And I don't even know why
The truth seems like a lie
In my cell there is no sky
When I was arrested in Shanghai
When I was arrested in Shanghai
When I was arrested in Shanghai
Woo!
In Rancid's song "Arrested in Shanghai," the singer describes being falsely accused and jailed in Shanghai. The song dissects themes of political suppression, censorship, and the impact of governmental control on personal freedom. The singer claims that he did not commit any crime, but was forced to confess in order to get leniency from the authorities. He describes his activism in speaking about his objections to the government's suppression of free speech and expression. The singer asserts that he did not take part in any violence, nor did he steal any military secrets. Rather, the only tool he possessed was his voice, his ability to create and express himself through poetry.
The singer further delves into the idea of using technology to break free from the government's control. He talks about transmitting his ideas across the world through radio waves, allowing him to share his ideas with a wider audience. The song concludes with a repeating chorus, emphasizing the frustration the singer feels at being wrongfully imprisoned and cut off from the rest of the world.
Overall, "Arrested in Shanghai" is a song that speaks to the struggles of those who have been oppressed and silenced by their government, highlighting the need for free speech, expression, and the pursuit of personal liberties.
