East Bay Night
Rancid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another east bay night
East bay night
East bay night
East bay night

When the sun goes down
And the night come around
And the fog come a rolling in,
When you cast a line
To go dance one time
And an old friend invites you in,
Hear a punk rock song
And we sing along
Everything gonna be alright

Another east bay night
East bay night
East bay night
East bay night

Well gramma stands on
The very same land
On the old house
Up on the hill,
You can see the San Francisco bay
Alcatraz Albany landfill,
And reminisce on the front porch
Under a yellow light

Another east nay night
East bay night
East bay night
East bay night

Earthquakes shake and fires
Take from this view
I've seen it all,
I've tasted smoke
As the hills burned
I heard the freeway fall,
When there's nothing to say
Just look into the bay
You know some things
They just feel right

Another east bay night
East bay night
East bay night
East bay night

(Gonna be alright)

Overall Meaning

The song "East Bay Night" by Rancid is a nostalgic tribute to the band's hometown of Berkeley, California. The lyrics describe a typical night in the East Bay area, where the fog rolls in and people gather to dance and sing along to punk rock songs. The song evokes a sense of community and shared experiences, with references to an old friend inviting you in and standing on the same land as your grandmother. The view of the San Francisco Bay and landmarks like Alcatraz and the Albany landfill are also mentioned, adding to the feeling of connection to the surrounding area.

The song also acknowledges the tumultuous history of the East Bay, with references to earthquakes shaking the ground and fires consuming the hills. Despite these challenges, the lyrics suggest that there is a sense of resilience and hope in the community, as people come together to find comfort in the familiar rhythms of punk rock and shared experiences.

Overall, "East Bay Night" is a poignant and reflective tribute to a place that is dear to the hearts of the members of Rancid, and to the sense of community and resilience that they have found there.

So much nostalgia and so many memories to this. Feels good. 17 years listening to this band and always my favorite.

MichaelD8393

This song came out when I was in high school, then I rediscovered it while bartending in college. Hearing it now reminds me of all the stories that used to fly around that bar; the quarterback bragging about the touchdowns he made, the cheerleaders flirting with him and the other players, wondering what the professors were doing after classes. Memories!

M

@MichaelD8393 Sounds really nostalgic. I feel like Rancid brings back nostalgia more than any band for me. Something about the songs is so moving and deep routed in the feeling of remembering.

MichaelD8393

@M Damn, once Tim opens the song with "Another East Bay Night," I'm back behind the bar making drinks & pouring beers, listening to everyone's stories & gossip about their professors.

M

@MichaelD8393 Sounds fun!~ For me its going on adventures from show to show everywhere possible and never sleeping lol. Miss the freedom of doing whatever whenever. Have you been to some of their shows? Feels like a familiar experience, even the first time.
