Rancid has had two lineup changes since its inception, with Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman being continuous members. Their current lineup consists of Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Freeman on bass and vocals, Lars Frederiksen on guitar and vocals, and Branden Steineckert on drums. The band was formed by Armstrong, Freeman, and former drummer Brett Reed, who left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Steineckert. This lineup recorded their first album, with Frederiksen joining the band on their subsequent tour.
To date, Rancid has released ten studio albums, one split album, one compilation, two extended plays, and a series of live online-only albums, and has been featured on a number of compilation albums. The band has sold over four million records worldwide, making it one of the most successful punk rock groups of all time. The band rose to fame in 1994 with its second studio album, Let's Go, featuring the single "Salvation". In the following year, Rancid released its highly successful album ...And Out Come the Wolves, which produced its best-known songs "Roots Radicals", "Ruby Soho", and "Time Bomb", and was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA, selling over one million copies in the United States alone. Its next six albums – Life Won't Wait (1998), Rancid (2000), Indestructible (2003), Let the Dominoes Fall (2009), ...Honor Is All We Know (2014) and Trouble Maker (2017) – were also critically acclaimed, though not as commercially successful as ...And Out Come the Wolves. The band released their tenth album, Tomorrow Never Comes, in June 2023.

Got my enemies cross-haired and in my sight
I take a bad situation, gonna make it right
In the shadows of darkness, I stand in the light
You see it's our style to keep it true
I had a bad year, a lot I've gone through
I've been knocked out, beat down, black and blue
She's not the one coming back for you
If I fall back down
You're gonna help me back up again
If I fall back down
You're gonna be my friend
If I fall back down
You're gonna help me back up again
If I fall back down
You're gonna be my friend
It takes disaster to learn a lesson
You're gonna make it through the darkest night
Some people betray one and cause treason
We're going to make everything alright, whoo
Well, the worst of times now, they don't phase me
Even if I look and act really crazy
On my way down she betrayed me
Now my vision is no longer hazy
I'm very lucky to have my crew
They stood by me when she flew
I've been knocked out, beat down, black and blue
She's not the one coming back for you
She's not the one coming back for you
If I fall back down
You're gonna help me back up again
If I fall back down
You're gonna be my friend
If I fall back down
You're gonna help me back up again
If I fall back down
You're gonna be my friend
If I fall back down
You're gonna help me back up again
If I fall back down
You're gonna be my friend
If I fall back down
You're gonna help me back up again
If I fall back down
You're gonna be my friend (if I fall back down)
If I fall back down
You're gonna help me back up again (if I fall back down)
If I fall back down
You're gonna be my friend (if I fall back down)
If I fall back down
You're gonna help me back up again (if I fall back down)
If I fall back down
You're gonna be my friend
The lyrics to Rancid's song Fall Back Down tell a story of perseverance through tough times, with the support of friends. The first verse speaks to the singer's determination to make things right, despite facing challenges and enemies. He acknowledges that he's had a rough year and has been knocked down, but his crew has stood by him. The chorus, "If I fall back down / You're gonna help me back up again / If I fall back down / You're gonna be my friend" drives home the message that he can count on his friends to help him through difficult times.
The second verse reflects on the idea that it takes a disaster to learn a lesson and that even in the darkest nights, they will make it through. The singer recounts a betrayal by a past love interest, but acknowledges that with the support of his friends, he's come out the other side with a clearer vision of himself and his life. The lyrics end with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the importance of the support system the singer has around him.
The overall message of the song is inspiring and hopeful - despite difficulties and setbacks, there are people who will stand by you and lift you up when you fall.
