Rancid has had two lineup changes since its inception, with Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman being continuous members. Their current lineup consists of Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Freeman on bass and vocals, Lars Frederiksen on guitar and vocals, and Branden Steineckert on drums. The band was formed by Armstrong, Freeman, and former drummer Brett Reed, who left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Steineckert. This lineup recorded their first album, with Frederiksen joining the band on their subsequent tour.
To date, Rancid has released ten studio albums, one split album, one compilation, two extended plays, and a series of live online-only albums, and has been featured on a number of compilation albums. The band has sold over four million records worldwide, making it one of the most successful punk rock groups of all time. The band rose to fame in 1994 with its second studio album, Let's Go, featuring the single "Salvation". In the following year, Rancid released its highly successful album ...And Out Come the Wolves, which produced its best-known songs "Roots Radicals", "Ruby Soho", and "Time Bomb", and was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA, selling over one million copies in the United States alone. Its next six albums – Life Won't Wait (1998), Rancid (2000), Indestructible (2003), Let the Dominoes Fall (2009), ...Honor Is All We Know (2014) and Trouble Maker (2017) – were also critically acclaimed, though not as commercially successful as ...And Out Come the Wolves. The band released their tenth album, Tomorrow Never Comes, in June 2023.

Holiday Sunrise
Rancid Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Midnight Christmas eve
A kid could feel alone
I drink my scotch
My mind goes astray
Midnight Christmas eve
Starts out in a way
I cried when I had no shoes
It's just a
Holiday sunrise
I suddenly realized
I got no alibis
Holiday sunrise
Relatives of mine said
They were born again
Fucked up world has made me born against
I'm a sinner and my soul should be cleansed
I'll take my chances when I'm dead
The Rancid song "Holiday Sunrise" is a poignant tune that seems to speak to the sense of isolation and restlessness felt by the singer as they set out on a journey, "packing everything they owned" on midnight Christmas Eve. The singer describes the feeling of being "alone," and begins to drink Scotch, allowing their mind to wander. But then something shifts, and at "holiday sunrise," the singer has an epiphany - they suddenly "realize" they have "no alibis." The implication seems to be that the singer has finally recognized something fundamental about themselves - perhaps they have been blaming their problems on external factors, but now understand that they must take responsibility for themselves. The song enacts this shift with a stark clarity, moving the listener from a place of confusion and isolation to one of sudden clarity.
The song is comprised of short, punchy verses, and the lyrics are full of sharp, vivid imagery - the singer cries over not having shoes until they meet the man with no feet, underscoring the idea that there is always someone in a worse situation than you ("there but for the grace of God go I"). The sense of spiritual uncertainty also comes through in lines like "relatives of mine said they were born again... messed up world has made me born against / I'm a sinner and my soul should be cleansed," suggesting a certain tension between faith and the realities of the world. Ultimately, though, the song seems to celebrate the idea of personal revelation - even if it comes at an odd moment ("holiday sunrise"), and even if it doesn't bring a clear resolution.
