Rancid has had two lineup changes since its inception, with Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman being continuous members. Their current lineup consists of Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Freeman on bass and vocals, Lars Frederiksen on guitar and vocals, and Branden Steineckert on drums. The band was formed by Armstrong, Freeman, and former drummer Brett Reed, who left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Steineckert. This lineup recorded their first album, with Frederiksen joining the band on their subsequent tour.
To date, Rancid has released ten studio albums, one split album, one compilation, two extended plays, and a series of live online-only albums, and has been featured on a number of compilation albums. The band has sold over four million records worldwide, making it one of the most successful punk rock groups of all time. The band rose to fame in 1994 with its second studio album, Let's Go, featuring the single "Salvation". In the following year, Rancid released its highly successful album ...And Out Come the Wolves, which produced its best-known songs "Roots Radicals", "Ruby Soho", and "Time Bomb", and was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA, selling over one million copies in the United States alone. Its next six albums – Life Won't Wait (1998), Rancid (2000), Indestructible (2003), Let the Dominoes Fall (2009), ...Honor Is All We Know (2014) and Trouble Maker (2017) – were also critically acclaimed, though not as commercially successful as ...And Out Come the Wolves. The band released their tenth album, Tomorrow Never Comes, in June 2023.

Rancid Lyrics

Yeah!
Here's the new face of rock-n'-roll!
It's about fightin' toe to toe...
Hard times come,
Yeah the hard times go.
When I say, come one, come all.
Well all the hooligans and bootboys know one thing for sure,
Scars been stricken on their face
Well all the hooligans and bootboys know one thing for sure,
Scars been stricken on their face
One man's decision brings another's opposition completely unbound.
Down on the flats where the seaside meets my lonely youngtown
Well all the rudies and skins well they're out on the streets making the way on the dole,
Between the bottles and sex they smash and they wreck for something to live
Well all the hooligans and bootboys know one thing for sure,
Scars been stricken on their face.
Sometimes you know there's no place to go,
But to a long life of crime.
Yeah but it's so wrong to steal,
Someone's very last meal to profit up a dime.
Your poe poes and greys well they end up in jail gonna swing the cowboys
Well you took a bite outta the apple of decision that got ya there boy.
Well all the hooligans and bootboys know one thing for sure,
Scars been stricken on their face
Well all the hooligans and bootboys know one thing for sure,
Scars been stricken on their face
Hooligans and bootboys, I don't want no racial hatred
"Black and white, who are portrayed without bias
These are the people whose voice I want to be..."
I said the hooligans!
Rancid
Bootboys!
Rancid
Hooligans!
Rancid
Bootboys!
Rancid
Well all the hooligans and bootboys know one thing for sure,
Scars been stricken on their face
Well all the hooligans and bootboys know one thing for sure,
Ahhh ahhhh ahhhhhh...
The lyrics of Rancid's song Hooligans describe the difficult and often violent lifestyle of many young people from impoverished areas in England. The song's opening lines, "Here's the new face of rock-n'-roll! It's about fightin' toe to toe... Hard times come, Yeah the hard times go," set the tone for the rest of the song, which speaks of the struggles faced by these hooligans and bootboys who are often forgotten by society. The lyrics highlight the violence that these young people are forced to endure and how it leaves a mark on their faces, reminding them of their past and the difficulties they've faced.
The song suggests that the choices we make in life can often lead us down difficult paths. The line "One man's decision brings another's opposition completely unbound" suggests that the choices of one person can have a ripple effect on the lives of those around them. The song also speaks to the idea that sometimes there's no other option but a life of crime. The line "Sometimes you know there's no place to go, But to a long life of crime" emphasizes the idea that for these young people, crime is often the only way to survive.
Overall, the lyrics of Hooligans paint a bleak picture of life for young people in England's impoverished areas. The song is a commentary on the intersection of poverty, violence, and crime and how these factors can shape the lives of the people who live in these communities.
