Spirit of '87
Rancid Lyrics

Saturday,
Where else are you gonna go
Ain't no way,
I'm gonna end up at the disco,
Make my way,
Through fist fights and stilettos,
To rock and roll, rock and roll.
Saturday,
Where else are you gonna go?
There's no way,
I'm gonna end up at the disco,
Make my way,
Through fist fights and stilettos,
To rock and roll, rock and roll, to rock and roll, rock and roll.

There's a club on the coast, where the kids get lost, and no one's gonna stare,
Yeah, sharp T's and bleached jeans with dayglow mohawk hair,
Yeah, misfits and homeless kids call their home there,
Don't tell me it ain't real! Don't you fucking dare!
Yeah, ten punk pile in the car, nothing going on,
Turn up my radio, 'cause it's my favorite song,
There's a club on the coast where all the kids get along,
Skins and punk, and wayward ones,
Nothing could go wrong!

Saturday,
Where else are you gonna go?
There's no way,
I'm gonna end up at the disco,
Make my way,
Through fist fights and stilettos,
To rock and roll, rock and roll.

Saturday,
Where else are you gonna go?
There's no way,
I'm gonna end up at the disco,
Make my way,
Through fist fights and stilettos,
To rock and roll, rock and roll, rock and roll,
To rock and roll, rock and roll.

Do you know what, when I show up, there's gonna be some fucking action,
Show me the styles once in a while, that's the fucking attraction,
She said I'ma fuck 'em up, that's the satisfaction,
Bottle of red, straight ahead, detox transaction,
Hells Angels ran my neighborhood,
It was always understood,
I was running errands for the Angels,
I was a little fucking hood!
Punk rock was my way out, it was always in my blood,
And didn't give a fuck if I was locked up, should be dead or in jail!

Saturday,
Where else are you gonna go?
There's no way,
I'm gonna end up at the disco,
Make my way,
Through fist fights and stilettos,
To rock and roll, rock and roll.

Saturday,
Where else are you gonna go?
There's no way,
I'm gonna end up at the disco,
Make my way,
Through fist fights and stilettos,
To rock and roll, rock and roll.

Family turns their back on their son,
Now we're all alone,
Now we ain't got a home,
Now we're among our own!

Saturday,
Where else are you gonna go?
There's no way,
I'm gonna end up at the disco,
Make my way,
Through fist fights and stilettos,
To rock and roll, rock and roll.

Saturday,
Where else are you gonna go?
There's no way,
I'm gonna end up at the disco,
Make my way,
Through fist fights and stilettos,
To rock and roll, rock and roll, rock and roll,
To rock and roll, rock and roll, rock and roll
To rock and roll, rock and roll, rock and roll

To rock and roll, rock and roll, rock and roll
To rock and roll, rock and roll, rock and roll

Overall Meaning

The song Spirit of '87 by punk rock band Rancid is an ode to the punk rock subculture of the late 1980s. The lyrics describe the singer’s excitement for the weekend and the prospect of going to a punk rock club on the coast where he can join his fellow “misfits and homeless kids” in the punk rock culture he embraces. He expresses his disdain for the mainstream disco scene and instead revels in the mosh pits, fist fights, and stilettos of the punk rock community. The singer sees punk rock as a way of life, a community that accepts him when his family turns their back on him.

The lyrics also touch on the rough conditions in which the singer grew up, with the Hells Angels running his neighborhood and him running errands for them as a “little fucking hood.” Punk rock was his escape and way out of that life, and he doesn't care if he ends up dead or in jail. In the end, he finds a sense of belonging among his own in the punk rock community that gives him a sense of home.

Overall, the lyrics to Spirit of '87 express the singer's love for punk rock as a lifestyle and the sense of belonging he finds among fellow misfits and homeless kids in the punk rock community.

@Bronko_

Rancid just hits the perfect spot between raw old school and melody. My favourite punk band.

@@teflongoon that’s dope. When I visited Japan I was by myself and would ask locals for rock venues but had no luck.
