All Along The Watchtower
Randy California Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There must be some kind of way out of here
Said the joker to the thief
There's much too much confusion
I cant get no relief

Businessman they drink my wine
Plow men dig my earth
None of them went on the line
Know what it's worth, they don't know

No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke

But you and I we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hour's getting late

All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Bare foot servants too

But outside in the cold distance
A wild cat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl

All along the watchtower
All along the watchtower
All along the watchtower

All along the watchtower
All along the watchtower

Overall Meaning

The song "All Along the Watchtower" by Randy California is a narrative about a conversation between a joker and a thief trying to find a way out of their current predicament. They both express their frustrations with the confusion they are experiencing and the inability to find any relief. The joker is dismayed that the businessmen drink his wine and the plowmen dig his earth yet neither side acknowledges the worth of his contributions. The thief kindly reminds him that there are others like him feeling hopeless and that life seems meaningless.

In the second stanza, the joker and the thief are asking the listener not to be deceived as they have been. They have come to accept that there is no meaning of life, and it is ultimately left up to us to create our own. They vent their anguish and warning against taking things at face value, and they ask the audience to join them in rebelling against the forces of confusion and hypocrisy.

As the song progresses, the scene shifts to an image of a watchtower where princes kept vigilance over their kingdom, but saw only the barefoot servants coming and going. In a disturbing contrast to this picturesque scene of harmony between the powerful and the powerless, the song ends with the arrival of two riders being signaled by the sound of a bellowing wildcat in the distance. The winds pick up as the two riders approach the watchtower, leaving the fate of the keeper and his guests unknown.

@sinequonon007

I just stumbled upon this channel. I must say, I truly approve!!

Randy and Jimi were close friends before Jimi moved to England to be discovered. Jimi gave Randy the name..Randy California. I am convinced they borrowed thoroughly from each other given that Randy was a prodigy and Jimi an experienced  dude who recognized genius when he saw it. Lore is that Randy was offered a spot in The Experience but he was too young to move to England and tour.

Great stories..amazing guitarists.

THANKS SUB!!!

Definitely the funkiest version of this song I've ever heard.
I love Jimi Hendrix's version the most, as he made it completely his own.
If you've ever heard Bob Dylan's original version, you can see how Jimi's version would have left Bob's version in the dust.
And more importantly?
Jimi's version is the version Randy California and friends are covering here.
(Bob Dylan's original sounds pretty much nothing like this.)
I love the funky groove they have going here.
Definitely tasty.
And all the guitar players here were awesome.

Randy has always been a greatly underappreciated guitarist. His playing is so sensitive and tasteful. Never too much, always just the right amount.

@CuttySX455

He played in a band in Greenwich Village in New York in 1966. He was only about 16-17. The leader of the band wanted to take him to England to be in his band, but his Mother said no, as he was too young. The name of that group was Jimmie James and The Blue Flames. Jimmie James was Jimi Hendrix. Jimi, of course went to England and the rest is music history. Randy, as you probably know, started Spirit.
