Crawford first polished her craft at club gigs from Cincinnati to St. Tropez, but made her name in mid 1970s in New York, where she sang with jazzmen George Benson on his album "Big Man" 1975) and Cannonball Adderley.
She then led Jazz veterans The Crusaders on the transatlantic big hit "Street Life" (1979). Her follow up solo efforts included "'One Day I'll Fly Away" (1980, Grand Prize for Tokyo International Music Festival); "'You Might Need Somebody" (1981); and "'Rainy Night In Georgia" (1981); which all became soul standards. Secret Combination (1981) stayed on the Billboard album chart for 60 weeks, after which her profile dipped, despite a return to the Top 10 with "Almaz" in (1986).
Naked And True (1995) brought Crawford back to her roots: it included Benson's "Give Me The Night", and confirmed her soul heritage by featuring Funkadelicists Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell and The Fred Wesley Horns. But she enjoyed her highest profile of the decade when rising starlet Shola Ama had a worldwide hit with a cover of " You Might Need Somebody" in 1997.
She still continues to make great R&B hits and performs on various Jazz Festivals around the world.

That she's the flowers the wind and spring
In all her splendor, sweetly surrendering
The love that Innocence brings
Almaz, pure and simple,
born in a world where love survives
Now men will want her, cause life don't haunt her
Now I watch closely, and I watch wholely
I can't imagine love so rare
She's young and tender, but will life bend her
I look around is she everywhere
He throws her kisses, she shares his wishes
I'm sure he's king without a doubt
With love so captive, so solely captive
I ask if I could play the part
Randy Crawford's Almaz is a song about a young woman named Almaz who possesses a rare, pure, and innocent kind of love that is highly sought after by men. The first verse describes Almaz as someone who only smiles and is told by her lover that she is a symbol of all that is beautiful in the world - the flowers, the wind, and spring. She surrenders herself freely and fully to the love that innocence brings. Almaz is the epitome of purity and simplicity, and one can't help but feel envious of her.
The chorus of the song talks about how lucky Almaz is to be born in a world where love survives. Men will want her because life doesn't haunt her. This line is a reference to how our life experiences can scar us and make it difficult for us to love with an open heart. But Almaz's innocence shields her from those pains, and it is why men are so drawn to her. The bridge of the song acknowledges that love is not always so simple and pure. Life can bend us, especially when we are young and tender like Almaz. One wonders if her rare kind of love can survive in a world where innocence is often not enough.
