Niagara
Rane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I look up at the sky
She is there tonight
She left you behind
And it wasn't right.

You always seem to laugh in the rain
But peace can't find your mind
And there's a blank white canvas
Empty as a pocket hiding behind your eyes.

So this boat has run away, out of control
Moving to the edge for the fall of your soul
When you run with the river, you'll come to the place
Where your water falls down

You look up at the sky
You can see her there tonight
The rain falls from your eyes
As you wonder why

These words that trouble you come
When they tell you it will be all right
But a part of you is broken now
And you can see through those lies

So this boat has run away, out of control
Moving to the edge for the fall of your soul

When you run with the river, you'll come to the place
Where your water falls down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rane's song Niagara paint a picture of a person who is in a state of emotional turmoil. The singer seems to be struggling with the aftermath of a breakup or losing someone they love. The first verse starts with the singer looking up at the sky, possibly finding solace in nature. The lyrics suggest that the person they were once close to is no longer around, and it wasn't a mutually agreed-upon separation. The singer then describes their inability to find peace, despite their efforts to distract themselves from the pain. The line, "And there's a blank white canvas, empty as a pocket hiding behind your eyes," implies that the singer is numb and devoid of emotions.

The second verse describes the singer's situation as a boat that has run away, out of control. The line, "Moving to the edge for the fall of your soul," is indicative of the singer's self-destructive tendencies. Instead of facing their pain, they are letting themselves get carried away by the current of the river of life. However, the final lines, "When you run with the river, you'll come to the place where your water falls down," provide hope for the singer. It suggests that if they run with life instead of fighting against it, they will eventually come to a place where they can let their emotions flow freely.
