Taking an interest in music from the age of 6, joining gospel groups and attending Young Musicians Program at Berklee during middle school, Saadiq got the chance phone call of a lifetime, when Sheila E. called one day looking for touring musicians to join Prince on his Parade tour. Saadiq spent two years on the road, a time he called "My University".
Saadiq made a name for himself as the lead vocalist in the rhythm and blues and dance trio Tony! Toni! Toné!. He went by his birth name during the beginning of Tony! Toni! Toné!, where he was joined by his brother Dwayne Wiggins, and his cousin Timothy Christian. He adopted the name of Raphael Saadiq in the mid-1990s.
After the 1996 Tony! Toni! Toné! album, House of Music, (when he performed under his current name) Saadiq started his solo career. He produced a few solo tracks, but Saadiq's next big project became the R&B supergroup Lucy Pearl. He recorded the self-titled album with Dawn Robinson (En Vogue) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest). This group only lasted for one album. His solo album Instant Vintage, released in 2002, also earned 5 Grammy nominations.
Saadiq released his third solo album, The Way I See It, on September 16 2008, featuring collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Joss Stone. Saadiq acknowledges the album's old school soul sound, which he says includes nods to Gladys Knight & The Pips, Al Green, The Four Tops, The Delfonics and The Stylistics.
Various artists have tapped Saadiq to produce their work through the years. Some of Saadiq's most notable work has been with D'Angelo. The 2000 collaboration "Untitled" won D'Angelo a Grammy award for Best R&B Album. In 2007, Saadiq was called on to produce the whole third album from UK Soul singer Joss Stone. Other artists he has collaborated with include The Roots, Macy Gray, Snoop Dogg, Kelis, Q-Tip and Young Bellz.
In 2002, Saadiq founded his own record label, Pookie Entertainment. Among the artists on the label are Joi and Truth Hurts.

Let's Get Down
Raphael Saadiq Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Tony Toni Tone
And DJ Quick
You didn't think we could flip it on yo ass, huh?
Something for the dance floor
In a real way
It's going down like this forever
And a day
Now what you hear is not a drag
Cause Mr. DJ Quik got a brand new bag
But first I gotta bang bang
A boogie for the boogie
To the rhythm of the ghettoey streets
Check it out now
You trying to give me some Eight Ball
But no way
I'd rather have a Mimosa
With Crystal and O.J., yeah
Just a little something bubbly and tingly
To have me walking around naked
But wait a second
The function's on
Around midnight
What time is it
Are you inside
Available
To come and play
Give me a clue
So I don't have to
Look for you
[Chorus]
Come on let's get down, let's get down, let's get down
Come on let's get down
In my black Chevrolet
Come on let's get down, let's get down, let's get down
Come on let's get down, let's get down
Yeah, now we don't need a club
We can do it at my house
My front door's open so homey's can bust it out
And ladies if you're coming leave your children at the nursery
So you can get slow on the anniversary
Kill me
I dip dip da
So don't be looking stupid when I unfasten your bra
You know you want to mack this
Because I come stronger than the IRS
Whenever you done got delinquent on your taxes
Now here I am
Staring at you
I need a drink
You need one too
Who is your friend
She don't look nice
But I know she will
Later on tonight
Come on let's get down
[Chorus]
Now I'm at the club
And I'm off that drug
The one they call alcohol got me acting y'all
I hump two first before I hump two more
And now I'm throwing up my guts out the car door
Over consumption you know how it is y'all
Got your homey beggin' for some Pepto Bismol
But when my stomach's right I'll be back tonight
To get that lady I was grinding on the wall
Now that I feel a little better than I felt a little while ago, yeah
I'm going back to the same spot
Where I met you on the floor
Now table one, that's my folks
And table two, that's my folks
And everybody knows my name
Now table three that's B. Grund
And table four that's G-One
You best be prepared
Cause it's all a game you know
Come on let's get down, let's get down, let's get down
Come on let's get down, let's get down, let's get down
Come on let's get down, let's get down, let's get down
Come on let's get down, let's get down, let's get down
In my black Chevrolet
I gotta get my groove on (keep movin' and groovin', movin' and groovin')
I gotta get my groove on (keep shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass)
I gotta get my groove on (keep movin' and groovin', movin' and groovin')
I gotta get get my groove on (keep shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass)
I'm groovin' (say what?)
Movin' (yeah)
Yeah
[Chorus: x2]
The song "Let's Get Down" by Raphael Saadiq featuring DJ Quik and Tony Toni Tone is a classic R&B dance floor anthem. The lyrics to this song revolve around having a good time, letting loose, and enjoying the company of others. The song opens with a clever reference to James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," with Quik claiming that he's got one too. Then, the song moves into a verse about partying and drinking, with Saadiq refusing an offer of drugs in favor of something a little more festive: a Mimosa with Crystal and O.J.
The chorus repeats the phrase "let's get down" four times, calling people to the dance floor and urging them to let loose. The second verse is all about picking up women and enjoying some physical pleasure, with Saadiq urging his partner to "leave your children at the nursery" so that she can "get slow on the anniversary." The bridge provides a moment of reprieve from the frenetic energy of the rest of the song, allowing Saadiq to express some vulnerability and connect with his partner in a more intimate way.
Overall, the song is a classic example of early 2000s R&B, full of party-ready beats and smooth, soulful vocals. It's an ode to living in the moment, having fun, and letting loose with the people you care about.
