Taking an interest in music from the age of 6, joining gospel groups and attending Young Musicians Program at Berklee during middle school, Saadiq got the chance phone call of a lifetime, when Sheila E. called one day looking for touring musicians to join Prince on his Parade tour. Saadiq spent two years on the road, a time he called "My University".
Saadiq made a name for himself as the lead vocalist in the rhythm and blues and dance trio Tony! Toni! Toné!. He went by his birth name during the beginning of Tony! Toni! Toné!, where he was joined by his brother Dwayne Wiggins, and his cousin Timothy Christian. He adopted the name of Raphael Saadiq in the mid-1990s.
After the 1996 Tony! Toni! Toné! album, House of Music, (when he performed under his current name) Saadiq started his solo career. He produced a few solo tracks, but Saadiq's next big project became the R&B supergroup Lucy Pearl. He recorded the self-titled album with Dawn Robinson (En Vogue) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest). This group only lasted for one album. His solo album Instant Vintage, released in 2002, also earned 5 Grammy nominations.
Saadiq released his third solo album, The Way I See It, on September 16 2008, featuring collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Joss Stone. Saadiq acknowledges the album's old school soul sound, which he says includes nods to Gladys Knight & The Pips, Al Green, The Four Tops, The Delfonics and The Stylistics.
Various artists have tapped Saadiq to produce their work through the years. Some of Saadiq's most notable work has been with D'Angelo. The 2000 collaboration "Untitled" won D'Angelo a Grammy award for Best R&B Album. In 2007, Saadiq was called on to produce the whole third album from UK Soul singer Joss Stone. Other artists he has collaborated with include The Roots, Macy Gray, Snoop Dogg, Kelis, Q-Tip and Young Bellz.
In 2002, Saadiq founded his own record label, Pookie Entertainment. Among the artists on the label are Joi and Truth Hurts.

There's something that I want from you
Don't front, you know what it is
Come here
I can't get enough of your thing
I can't get enough of your thing
I can't get enough of your thing
I can't get enough of your thing
Since I had you naked
And I'm feeling like its nicotine
And I only wish that I could keep my cool
You got me being a fool
And I want another piece of you
I'm lonely like in solitaire
And I wish I had you here
And I'll push you down and climb on top of you
The more that your away
The more I wish you stay
And I'm gonna have my way with you
And there is no way that I'll stop wanting you
Now tell me if its hard, for you to give it up
Is it wrong, for me to want your love
Is it crazy, that I want you so bad
Uh, like I do
And there is no way that I'll stop loving you
[Chorus]
I can't get enough of your thing
(the way you hold me)
I can't get enough of your thing
(the way you touch me)
I can't get enough of your thing
(whats a girl to do)
I can't get enough of your thing
(with a man like you)
Oh oh oh, everybody says I'm crazy
They say you got me open
Like a twenty four hour liquor store
You never keep your baby running
You always keep me cumming
And now in feeling for some more
Come close to me
Baby be strong
Don't ever stop
Keep holding on
Everybody's got their own way of living
And I gotta be down with the way I'm feelin'
And there is no way that I'll stop wanting you
Now tell me is if its hard, for you to give it up
And is it wrong, for me to want your love
And is it crazy, that I want you so bad
Uh, like I do
And there is no way that I'll stop loving you
[Chorus:Repeat x2]
In the song "Raphael Saadiq," the artist sings about his intense attraction and desire for his romantic partner. Right from the beginning, it is clear that there is a strong sexual undertone in the song, with Saadiq asking his partner not to "front" because they both know what he wants. He describes how he cannot get enough of his partner's "thing," which could refer to both their physical body as well as their personality or essence. Saadiq's desire for his partner is compared to a nicotine addiction, with him wishing that he could keep his cool and not act like a fool around them.
Throughout the song, Saadiq expresses his longing for his partner, saying that they make him feel lonely when they are away and that he wishes they were there with him. He talks about how he wants to be close to them, climb on top of them, and have his way with them. Despite what other people may say about their relationship or how intense his attraction to them is, Saadiq makes it clear that he cannot stop wanting or loving them.
Overall, "Raphael Saadiq" is a sensual and passionate song that expresses the intensity of romantic attraction and desire. Saadiq's vocals have a raw and emotive quality that enhances the emotions conveyed in the lyrics.
