The psychedelic insanity can be traced back to their college roots, when the guys were the go-to band for dunkin‘ dorm rooms and sonic exploration. In 2012 Rare Monk teamed up with noted producer Skyler Norwood (Blind Pilot, Horsefeathers, Talkdemonic) for their self-released EP, ‘Death By Proxy’. The giddy pop thrill of the title track and the funky, slow burn of “Underground” act as the band's mission statement, and according to Dorian, “Is pretty genuine. I think the important thing here is not to try and fit a compartmentalized soundscape, or to try and be different from everyone else; the importance lies in doing what you are passionate about. Passion is genuine.”
In 2014 Rare Monk release a limited edition 7” AA-side single with new songs “Splice” and “Sleep/Attack” via B3SCI Records. The release was recorded and produced late Summer 2013 in Los Angeles at Wax LTD Studios by Wally Gagel (Best Coast, Muse, Family Of The Year, Folk Implosion). The songs showcase the next frontier for a band who venture toward a lauded career, capturing the sheer energy of an incredible live show, and bridging a sound for the masses with that of music appreciation.

So please let me desecrate your rights
and vivisect you from inside
I'd like to show you
You've got both feet in the grave
Now through our teeth we'll spit you right back in it
So tell me that it's over
I'll tell you that I need it
I need the hunt, the chase, and the kill
The kill, the kill, the kill, it's all we needed
The kill, the kill, the kill, don't overcomplicate it
The kill, the kill, the kill, it's all we needed
Now I'll sue your family at your funeral
I'm gonna find you
Yeah I'll disseminate your dox across the waters of the proxeas
Just in time too
To show your mistakes,
Don't underestimate the backlash of hypocrisy
I'll sell you
Yeah I'll copyright your breath, just a few cents
My legal team said I should tell you
I've already trademarked your death,
I'll post your suicide to Vimeo.
The lyrics to Rare Monk's song "Death By Proxy" depict a dark and twisted desire for power and control. The first stanza immediately sets the disturbing tone as the singer expresses their desire to "desecrate" and "vivisect" the other person. The singer then reveals their ultimate goal is to spit the other person back in their own grave. The second stanza goes further into this psychotic behavior as the singer expresses joy in the kill and even plans to sue the family at the person's funeral. The third stanza takes it even further as the singer plans to disseminate the other person's personal information and copyright everything about them, even their death.
The lyrics could be interpreted in a number of ways - as a reflection of our society's obsession with power, control, and fame, or as a commentary on the increasing lack of empathy and humanity in our online interactions. The lyrics are chilling and unsettling, but they also contain a certain level of self-awareness, acknowledging the desire for control and the destructive consequences that come with it.
