History: Rascal Flatts were founded near Columbus, Ohio. Gary LeVox and Jay DeMarcus were second cousins from a musical family. DeMarcus's brother-in-law, James Otto, is also a country music artist. DeMarcus moved to Nashville in 1992, earning his first record deal as part of a Christian group called East to West. In 1997, he finally convinced LeVox to leave behind his job with the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and follow his musical dreams as well.
DeMarcus soon joined Chely Wright's band, and there he met Joe Don Rooney. DeMarcus and LeVox were working in a Printer's Alley nightclub, and when their part-time guitarist could not make it one night, DeMarcus invited Rooney to sit in. Eventually, they took the name Rascal Flatts and began performing together, getting signed to Lyric Street Records in late 1999.
The band was recently announced that they have celebrated 10 years of being one of the hottest country bands of the decade. On January 7, 2020, Rascal Flatts announced that they would be disbanding following a farewell tour after twenty years together. However, this farewell tour was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the group's disbandment was officially confirmed in October 2021.

Rascal Flatts Lyrics

Your candle burns at both ends but you can't make it stop
Your a farmer on a John Deer honest work for little pay
Now throw that thing in park it's time to play
[Chorus]
Like it's midnight in Vegas
Mardi Gras in New Orleans
You know what I mean
It's like lovers in Paris, Sunset Strip in L.A.
Doesn't matter where you are
Well it's alright it's alright to play
Oh yes it is
Where there ain't no drugs or doctors
Who can get you what you need
I've got the magic potion
And it doesn't cost a thing
Yeah you've seen some hard times
Life just works out that way
When your smack dab in the middle
You gotta play
[Chorus]
Hey hey
Like a kiss in the moonlight
Barefoot walks on the beach
Like sipping Champagne straight from a bottle
You know what I mean
[Chorus]
(It's alright to play it's alright it's alright it's alright to play yeah it's alright)
Come on come on come on
It's alright to play (it's alright to play it's alright it's alright it's alright to play)
It's alright to play yeah (it's alright to play it's alright it's alright it's alright to play)
Yeah it's alright to play (it's alright to play yeah it's alright it's alright to play)
Well it's alright it's alright well it's alright alright to play
It's alright to play
The song "Play" by Rascal Flatts is all about taking a break from the tough, hectic life and just having fun. It begins by describing the life of a single mom who, in spite of having three kids and three jobs, can't find the time to relax. The second verse tells the story of a farmer who works tirelessly, but never gets enough in return. There are times when everyone feels like they're caught in the middle, and that's when it's time to play.
The chorus reflects on how fun it is to let loose and have a good time, no matter where you are. It compares having fun to various iconic places and events, like midnight in Vegas, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, or New Year's Eve in New York City. It doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing, everyone deserves to have fun.
The bridge of the song talks about how life can be hard and unpredictable, but playing can make it a little bit easier. It asserts that there are some things that doctors and drugs can't fix, but fun can. The message of the song is to let go of stress and responsibility, even if it's just for a little while.
