Stand
Rascal Flatts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You feel like a candle in a hurricane
Just like a picture with a broken frame
Alone and helpless, like you've lost your fight
But you'll be all right, you'll be all right

Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend till you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees, you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
Then you stand, then you stand

Life's like a novel with the end ripped out
The edge of a canyon with only one way down
Take what you're given before it's gone
And start holdin' on, keep holdin' on

'Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend till you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees, you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
Then you stand, yeah, then you stand

Every time you get up
And get back in the race
One more small piece of you
Starts to fall into place

Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend till you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees, you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
Then you stand, then you stand

Yeah, then you stand, yeah
Yeah, baby

Woo hoo, woo hoo, woo hoo, woo hoo
Then you stand, yeah, yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "Stand" by Rascal Flatts is a deeply inspiring and motivational track that encourages listeners to never give up, no matter how tough life might get. The metaphorical lyrics remind us that even though we may feel like a "candle in a hurricane" or a "picture with a broken frame" and may have lost our fight, we will ultimately be all right. The song tells us that when the going gets tough, we need to find that inner strength, push through our limitations, and stand up to the challenges that life throws our way.

The chorus "Cause when push comes to shove, you taste what you're made of. You might bend till you break, 'cause it's all you can take. On your knees, you look up, decide you've had enough. You get mad, you get strong, wipe your hands, shake it off, then you stand, then you stand" is a powerful reminder that we all have inner strength and resilience to face the difficulties of life. No matter what might come our way, we can always choose to stand up and fight back.

The verses also encourage us to hold on to what we have and to keep pushing, even in the face of adversity. The line "Life's like a novel with the end ripped out, the edge of a canyon with only one way down. Take what you're given before it's gone, and start holdin' on, keep holdin' on" further emphasizes this point by reminding us to cherish the present moment and to stay hopeful for the future.

Overall, "Stand" is a song that inspires courage, resilience and determination in every listener. It speaks to our inner strength and encourages us to keep pushing even when life gets hard.

Stand
‘Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you’re made of
You might bend ‘til you break
‘Cause it’s all you can take
On your knees you look up
Decide you’ve had enough
You get mad, you get strong
Wipe your hands, shake it off
Then you stand, then you stand

Life’s like a novel with the end ripped out
The edge of a canyon with only one way down
Take what you’re given before it’s gone
And start holdin’ on, keep holdin’ on

Every time you get up and get back in the race
One more small piece of you starts to fall into place – yeah

Yeah then you stand – yeah
Yeah, baby
Woo hoo, Woo hoo, Woo hoo
Then you stand – yeah, yeah

Just like a picture with a broken frame
Alone and helpless
Like you've lost your fight
But you'll be alright, you'll be alright

You might bend, 'til you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees you look up

My Dad was the epitome of this song. Never met a man who had so much adversity in his life who just kept Standing up when knocked down. He worked from 13 years old on. As a young man had to pick up his abusive drunk father out of the alley after he passed out. He was a soldier wounded many times in war. He had three heart attacks and a stroke. Lost a child as a baby. Lost my mom to cancer and took care of her until she died. He lost a son-in-law who was like a son. Almost lost his farm several times because of poor health. He never drank and never hit us kids. He loved us and hugged us and he stood for as long as he could and then when he couldn’t I proudly pushed him around in a wheelchair. We took care of him until last six months of his life when we finally had to put him in a nursing home. He lived to 92 and now he lives forever with Jesus. I love you Dad and I hope I’m half the man you were.

I hadn't been able to cry for some time, this made me shed a few tears. Your dad kept pushing through and "STAND"ing". May he hear His voice, and come out of the grave in the resurrection to a better life. John 5: 28 and 29.

This is a inspirational song.. I'm a domestic survivor and this has always struck me as a encouraging song to other victims and/or survivors of abuse.. You get pushed so far and then you get mad you get strong walk away don't look back point of no return and then you stop being the victim and you STAND strong and proud as a SURVIVOR!
