History: Rascal Flatts were founded near Columbus, Ohio. Gary LeVox and Jay DeMarcus were second cousins from a musical family. DeMarcus's brother-in-law, James Otto, is also a country music artist. DeMarcus moved to Nashville in 1992, earning his first record deal as part of a Christian group called East to West. In 1997, he finally convinced LeVox to leave behind his job with the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and follow his musical dreams as well.
DeMarcus soon joined Chely Wright's band, and there he met Joe Don Rooney. DeMarcus and LeVox were working in a Printer's Alley nightclub, and when their part-time guitarist could not make it one night, DeMarcus invited Rooney to sit in. Eventually, they took the name Rascal Flatts and began performing together, getting signed to Lyric Street Records in late 1999.
The band was recently announced that they have celebrated 10 years of being one of the hottest country bands of the decade. On January 7, 2020, Rascal Flatts announced that they would be disbanding following a farewell tour after twenty years together. However, this farewell tour was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the group's disbandment was officially confirmed in October 2021.

I'll pick you up and we'll do dinner by the fire
And we'll watch it snow
It's from a year ago
Baby I love you and I can't wait to see you tonight
I've been thinking 'bout you all day long
She pushes nine to save
She still can't erase
'Cause it makes her feel close
Makes her smile it's like he's with her almost
Till the tears take over she's still in hell
But she tells herself she's ready to let him go
Cause that makes her feel close
It's just a worn out Notre Dame t-shirt
She's gotten mad and tried to throw
That thing away at least a hundred times
But she's got it on tonight
He used to wear it on the weekend just running around
Probably he forgot he even left it behind
She says it keeps her warm
Oh, but it's so much more
It makes her feel close
Makes her smile it's like he's with her almost
Till the tears take over
She's still in hell
But she tells herself
She's ready to let him go
Cause that makes her feel close
Just sayin' goodbye
Getting on with her life
Maybe give love another try
One more try
One more try
It makes her feel close
Makes her smile it's like he's with her almost
Till the tears take over
She's still in hell
But she tells herself
She's ready to let him go
'Cause that makes her feel close
The song Close by Rascal Flatts tells the story of a woman who is struggling to let go of a past love. The lyrics describe how she holds on to little things that remind her of him, like an old voicemail message from a year ago, a Notre Dame t-shirt he used to wear, and memories of being with him. These things provide her with a sense of comfort and make her feel close to him, almost as if he is still with her. However, even though she is trying to move on with her life, she still finds herself in a state of sadness and despair.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "It makes her feel close" several times, which highlights the idea that these small tokens she keeps from her past relationship provide her with a sense of connection to her lost love, even though he is no longer physically present. She acknowledges that she needs to let him go, but it is difficult for her to do so because of the powerful emotions tied to these objects.
Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the lingering effects of lost love and the ways in which people hold onto memories, even when it is painful to do so.
