Flowers madness and polar bear rug
Here's the water, just ankle deep high
Lay back and relax and look up at the sky
Your eyes never close, your mind's not at rest
Lay back, get waterlogged
Give us a kiss
Water spreads the small seed
Water kills the tall weed
Ophelia
Cut the stem and you'll see how you feel
Floating orchids just ain't no big deal
Never knowing's like knowing too much
Tap the table, oh here's more bad luck
Your eyes never close, your mind's not at rest
Lay back, get waterlogged
Give us a kiss
Water spreads the small seed
Water kills the tall weed
Ophelia
Ophelia
The song “Dig Ophelia” by Rasputina is a dark and eerie track that references Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the tragic character of Ophelia. The song starts with the line “Dig Ophelia, consider it dug”, and continues with the lines “Flowers madness and polar bear rug, Here's the water, just ankle deep high, Lay back and relax and look up at the sky”. The imagery in these lines is unsettling and macabre. Rasputina seem to be urging Ophelia to embrace her madness and take control of her destiny.
The lyrics continue with “Your eyes never close, your mind's not at rest, Lay back, get waterlogged, Give us a kiss”. The implication here seems to be that Ophelia is dead, and the request for a kiss is a reference to the traditional idea of the dead being kissed before being buried. The line “Lay back, get waterlogged” suggests that Ophelia has drowned, which is consistent with the character from Shakespeare’s play.
The final lines of the song repeat “Water spreads the small seed, Water kills the tall weed, Ophelia”. This is a reference to the idea that water can both nourish and destroy, and suggests that Ophelia’s death was a result of her own actions. Overall, “Dig Ophelia” is a haunting and powerful song that explores themes of madness, death, and self-destruction.
