How We Quit the Forest
Rasputina Lyrics

Had a very fine flat to let.
Figurine hutch, no the place wasn't much, but they
Got a peacock.
His belongings were meager but,
He was pretty, would bring good luck.
They would sing songs all aroung the piano and
He would say what he's gonna do.
He would say what he wanted to.
Ostrich and egret were filled with regret, but the
Rent's well worth him.
He felt things that they'd never felt.
Like the slap of a feather belt.
So till they sat by the fireplace silent.
A chill ran through them.
Ostrich and egret and peacock had very small dreams.
Picturing them just reminded them of calendar scenes.
Nobody's laughing when everyone's weeping, it seems.
So that's how we quit the forest.
The scene wasn't what it used to be.
The scene is never what it used to be.
So, that's how we quit the forest.
The scene wasn't what it used to be.
The scene is never what it used to be.
So, that's how we quit the forest.
The lyrics of Rasputina's "How We Quit the Forest" may seem obscure at first glance, but the song is actually a reflective commentary on the inevitability of change and how difficult it can be to adapt to new situations. The ostrich and the egret have a small flat and they become excited when they got a peacock, who they believed would bring them good luck. Peacock's arrival changes the dynamic of their little household; they sing songs and dance around the piano and even do the cakewalk. The ostrich and the egret come to realize that they had a content, albeit small, existence before, but now their lives revolve around someone else, and they are not entirely sure how to handle it. Peacock's influence goes beyond singing and dancing as he brings new experiences like the slap of the feather belt and an understanding of the world beyond their immediate surroundings, leading to a moment of silence and contemplation.
The characters' small dreams allude to the fact that sometimes in life, the future does not live up to our expectations, and it is difficult to accept that what we've dreamed of may not come to pass. The line "The scene wasn't what it used to be" suggests that the setting has changed, signifying that even the small corner of the world where ostrich and egret lived was not immune to external forces. The repeated line, "The scene is never what it used to be," is a reminder that change is a constant in life and that no matter how hard we try, we cannot hold onto the past.
