Stroud and Mast originally met as students at Skidmore College, but did not work together musically until 2001, when their project was named Cherry (later the name of the final song on their debut album). Written and recorded in the bedroom of Mast's Crown Heights, Brooklyn apartment, the band's debut album Ratatat for XL Recordings was released in 2004. This album is entirely instrumental, except for excerpts of dialogue at the ends of some tracks. Ratatat has toured with bands such as Interpol, Clinic, Junior Boys, The Killers, The Faint, Daft Punk, The Shins and most recently Björk.
Ratatat have been known to remix other artists' songs, most notably on their limited 2004 release Ratatat Remixes Mixtape Vol 1, which garnered the attention of Rolling Stone. In 2005, the band remixed a track for Swedish band Shout Out Louds and The Knife.
In August 2006, Ratatat released a second album Classics, from which the single Wildcat was taken.
In October 2006, a demo album from Ratatat entitled 9 Beats was leaked online. This set of tracks does not appear on any official discography listings. The tracks consist of short instrumental electronic musical pieces and demos for their next mixtape.
This release was followed by another remix album, Ratatat Remixes Mixtape Vol 2 which was released in 2007. This album featured 14 new remixes featuring: Bun B, Biggie Smalls, Jay-Z, Slim Thug, Devin the Dude, Young Jeezy, T.I., Beanie Sigel, Pimp C, Ludacris, Young Buck, Saigon, Juvenile, Z-ro, Memphis Bleek, Kanye West and exclusive tracks from Despot and Beans.
A third album, LP3, was released on July 8th, 2008.
In late April 2010, Ratatat's fourth album, LP4 was leaked online. The originally announced release date was June 8th, 2010.
Both musicians have had experience with other projects, such as Mast's E*Vax and Carpet Musics and Stroud's stage work with Ben Kweller and Florida's alternative rock band Dashboard Confessional.
The track Seventeen Years was featured in the 2008 movie Cloverfield.
The track Loud Pipes was featured in MLB 07: The Show for Playstation 2, Playstation 3, and Playstation Portable.

Young Buck:
Uh Ohhhhh, Young Buck
Dirty South, Yeahhh
I Hear Him Talkin', But He 'Bout To Get That Ass Stomp
Watch, I Get The Club Crunk, I'm'a Make 'Em Stomp
We Ain't Playin' want to Front, You Can Get That Ass Stomp
Now Where You From? Who The Boss? I'm'a Break Him Off
Where You From? Who The Boss? Lemme Break Him Off
Now Where You From? Who The Boss? I'm'a Break Him Off
Where You From? Who The Boss? Lemme Break Him Off
I'm Caddillac'n Through The Hood, Sittin' On 24's
T.V's Playin, Rim's Spinin, Blowin' Plenty Dro
Don't Have To Mention, When You Pimpin, You Get Plenty Hoes
It's All On You, If You Gon' Trick, Or You Gon' Get Yo' Dough
I Know I Got These Haters Mad, I Can Love That
When You Got Love For The Streets, They Give Ya' Love Back
Look In My Eyes, You Can Tell I Ain't Never Scared
Poppin' Them Thangs, I'm Rockin My Chain Anywhere
If You Gon' Represent Your Hood, What You Waitin On?
Security Better Back Up, When They Play This Song
And We 'Bout 50 Strong, Please Don't Make Us Do You Wrong
My Click Of Gorilla's, They Got They G-Unit's On
All Of That Mean Muggin' Really Don't Mean Nuthing
c'mon Take It Outside, Lemme See Sumthin
Wha-Wha-Wha-What Now?
Don't Get Bu-Bu-Bu-Buck'd Down
Stop All That Hatin' Or This Club Gon' Get Shu-Shut Down
Now Where You From? Who The Boss? I'm'a Break Him Off
Where You From? Who The Boss? Lemme Break Him Off
I Hear Him Talkin', But He 'Bout To Get That Ass Stomp
Watch, I Get The Club Crunk, I'm'a Make 'Em Stomp
We Ain't Playin' want to Front, You Can Get That Ass Stomp
Do It Like Them Dirty South Boys, Do, And Stomp
Now Where You From? Who The Boss? I'm'a Break Him Off
Where You From? Who The Boss? Lemme Break Him Off
Now Where You From? Who The Boss? I'm'a Break Him Off
Where You From? Who The Boss? Lemme Break Him Off

My Rhymes Is Nappy Rooted, Sum Verses Gotta Process
The Truth In This Booth, Ain't No Doubts When I'm Rappin'

When I Pull Up In The Louis Truck On 26's, People Dumb Out
If Lifes A Crap Game, I'm Rollin' 7's On The Come Out
These Rapper's Think I'm Ig-nent, Love Sayin' My Name
'cause Maintainin My Fish Tank, And They House, Cost The Same
Ask Me, I'd Say I Made It, And It Sure Wasn't Luck
Becuz Hustler's Relate To Me, And Some Are Younger Than Buck
You See I'm Married To My Music, But We Got A Prenupt
So If That Bitch Don't Act Right, I'm Still Gettin My Cut
My Deals Never Get Screwed, My Contracts Practice Abstinence
I'm Masterin This Program, Hazin' These Undergraduates
So, Pimpin' Be Easy, Quit Catchin' Feelings
'cause You Worth A Couple Hundred Grand, And I'm Worth Millions
Nobodys Thinkin' About You, Plus Your Beef Ain't Legit
So Please Stay Off The T.I.P. Of My Dick

The lyrics for Ratatat's “Stomp” are heavily focused on debasing other rappers, specifically from a Dirty South perspective. The song begins with the chorus, performed by an unidentified voice, which warns a targeted rapper that he’s about to get his ass “stomped” The warning later escalates to the fact that anyone who wants to front can get just that. Following that, Young Buck's versatile rap pattern steps in to add his own take on the threat, which is then complemented by The Game before ending with Ludacris. Throughout their verses, each rapper takes turns boasting of their wealth and fame, with a repeated emphasis on their support for and pride in their respective native regions. They also make threats of violence against any perceived threats, with a lesser focus given to lyrics of a sexual nature.
The song takes on themes that are typical in contemporary hip-hop music, such as violence and boasting about wealth, status, and sexual encounters with women. “Stomp” is one of Ratatat's few songs that features vocals, with most of the rest of their discography consisting of instrumental tracks. The song’s title is frequently repeated throughout the chorus and verses, serving as a focal point for the lyrics. The music video for the song opens with a man being beaten up in an alleyway by a group of men wearing shirts with the words “Dirty South” printed on them.
