His music reflects his interest and love for a variety of music including Latin music, country, blues, jazz and vintage rock and roll.
He started playing bass guitar while in high school and was a member of a small band playing the high school dance circuit. That band was known alternately as The Boys, The Tom Boys, and The Basics with Malo sharing vocal duties with guitarist, Tommy Anthony. In 1990, he became the vocalist for the four-man band, The Mavericks, for whom he penned most of the songs. In the vein of his singing idol Roy Orbison, Malo's soaring tenor voice helped the band create a unique blend of traditional Country music and 1950's Rock 'n' Roll. Evolving to an eclectic blend of Latin rhythms, classic country, jazz, pop and western swing, the Mavericks became one of the top American bands of the 1990s. They were voted by the Academy of Country Music, "Top Vocal Group and "Top New Vocal Group" in 1994. They were voted "Vocal Group of the Year" by the Country Music Association in 1995. On the same year, they won a Grammy for "Best Country Performance by a Group or Duo" for the song "Here Comes the Rain" from the album "Music For All Occasions".In 1996, they won again "Vocal Group of the Year" by the Country Music Association. . And on the same year, in London, England, they were awarded " Best Live Performance By a Group", " Best Vocal Performance by an Artist"," Best Vocal Group of the Year" and " Best International Touring Artist of the Year" by CMA- Europe. In Ireland, 1996, they won " Best Group of the Year" by the Irish Country Music Association.

It's been a while oh honey, my old friend
You've been there for me, faithful as you can be
You're the one I count on in the end
I wish it weren't so but that's how it seems to go
One night you're making memories then that's all you are
It's been a while oh honey, my old friend
You've been there for me, faithful as you can be
You're the one I count on in the end
Well, hello again
I wish it weren't so but that's how it seems to go
One night your making memories then that's all you are
Well, hello again, here's to what might have been
We've got no secrets, no reasons to pretend
Talk about old times, laugh until we cry
We haven't done this since I don't know when
Well, hello again, tell me where you've been
Well, hello again, here's to you old friend
Well, hello again, la, la, la, la, la, la
Well, hello again, la, la, la, la, la, la
Well, hello again, la, la, la, la, la, la
Well, hello again, la, la, la, la, la, la
The song Hello Again by Raul Malo is a song about an old friend coming back into his life after a long absence. The lyrics are very nostalgic and create a feeling of reminiscence. The opening line "Well, well, hello again, tell me where you've been" suggests that there has been a distance between the singer and the old friend. The second line "It's been a while oh honey, my old friend" further reinforces this sense of distance.
The third and fourth lines "You've been there for me, faithful as you can be, You're the one I count on in the end" acknowledge that despite the distance, the old friend has been a constant in the singer's life. The use of the word "faithful" suggests that the old friend has been reliable and dependable.
The song then turns to a reflection on the fleeting nature of memories. The line "I wish it weren’t so but that’s how it seems to go. One night you’re making memories then that’s all you are" suggests that memories can be fleeting and that sometimes our only connection to the past is through old friends.
The chorus repeats the opening lines but with an added emphasis on the reunion. The use of the phrase "here's to what might have been" suggests that there is some regret about the past and the idea of missed opportunities.
