His music reflects his interest and love for a variety of music including Latin music, country, blues, jazz and vintage rock and roll.
He started playing bass guitar while in high school and was a member of a small band playing the high school dance circuit. That band was known alternately as The Boys, The Tom Boys, and The Basics with Malo sharing vocal duties with guitarist, Tommy Anthony. In 1990, he became the vocalist for the four-man band, The Mavericks, for whom he penned most of the songs. In the vein of his singing idol Roy Orbison, Malo's soaring tenor voice helped the band create a unique blend of traditional Country music and 1950's Rock 'n' Roll. Evolving to an eclectic blend of Latin rhythms, classic country, jazz, pop and western swing, the Mavericks became one of the top American bands of the 1990s. They were voted by the Academy of Country Music, "Top Vocal Group and "Top New Vocal Group" in 1994. They were voted "Vocal Group of the Year" by the Country Music Association in 1995. On the same year, they won a Grammy for "Best Country Performance by a Group or Duo" for the song "Here Comes the Rain" from the album "Music For All Occasions".In 1996, they won again "Vocal Group of the Year" by the Country Music Association. . And on the same year, in London, England, they were awarded " Best Live Performance By a Group", " Best Vocal Performance by an Artist"," Best Vocal Group of the Year" and " Best International Touring Artist of the Year" by CMA- Europe. In Ireland, 1996, they won " Best Group of the Year" by the Irish Country Music Association.
It Only Hurts Me When I Cry

Is in the sunshine or the rain
And I don't feel no hurt at all
Unless you count when teardrops fall
I tell the truth 'cept when I lie
It only hurts me when I cry
You couldn't tell it by this smile
I worked for days and nights on end
Just to walk and talk again
You can't believe the time it takes
Yeah, to heal a heart once it breaks
The only time I feel the pain
Is in the sunshine or the rain
And I don't feel no hurt at all
Unless you count when teardrops fall
I tell the truth 'cept when I lie
It only hurts me when I cry
Oh, maybe every now and then
I have a small heartache again
You wouldn't know to look at me
Those tiny scars that you can't see
It was a struggle to survive
Yeah, I'm probably lucky I'm alive
The only time I feel the pain
Is in the sunshine or the rain
And I don't feel no hurt at all
Unless you count when teardrops fall
I tell the truth 'cept when I lie
It only hurts me when I cry
I tell the truth 'cept when I lie
It only hurts me when I cry
Raul Malo's "It Only Hurts Me When I Cry" is a poignant and soulful song that captures the emotions of someone who has gone through a painful experience and is trying to put the pieces back together. The lyrics talk about the pain that he feels only when he cries, and how he's fought for his recovery every day and night. The song reflects on the time it takes to heal a broken heart and the scars that remain.
The first verse of the song talks about the singer's struggles with the pain, saying that he only feels it when tears are falling, and that he doesn't feel any hurt at all otherwise, whether it's raining or the sun is out. The second verse goes on to talk about the recovery process, where he had to work for days and nights to walk and talk again. He also mentions that healing a broken heart takes time and that it's not something that happens overnight. The chorus then repeats, emphasizing that the pain is only felt when one cries.
The last verse talks about small heartaches that the singer may still feel, but they are not evident to others. He expresses gratitude for surviving the experience and holds hope for a better future. The song ends with the chorus repeating that crying is the only time that he feels the pain.
Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the pain of heartbreak, the healing process, and the scars that remain.
