The King
Raven Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Drop Dead Fred, your time is spent
Liven ya life in a camouflage tent
Never again see the light of day
Can't steal the sun without catches rays

Bow down mortal king
Accept your genocide
The time has come where never gone to
Bow down mortal king
Accept your genocide
The time has come where to

Everything like a dream
Nothings ever as it seams
Why the hell you act so mean
Cause i can Charlie sheen
Wooooohhha

Bow down mortal king
Accept your genocide
The time has come where never gone to
Bow down mortal king
Accept your genocide
The time has come where to
Rain let it rain, let it rain down on ya backs, rain down on your mother fucking
Rain let it rain, let it rain down on ya backs, rain down on your mother fucking

Bow down mortal king
Accept your genocide
The time has come where never gone to
Bow down mortal king
Accept your genocide
The time has come where to

Rain let it rain, let it rain down on ya backs, rain down on your mother fucking
Rain let it rain, let it rain down on ya backs, rain down on your mother fucking

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Raven's song "The King" have a number of potential interpretations, but one possible explanation of the underlying message is that it is a critique or condemnation of a corrupt or oppressive ruler, who is being called to account for his crimes. "Drop Dead Fred" could be a nickname for this ruler, suggesting that he is being threatened or attacked by some unknown force or rebels. The reference to a "camouflage tent" might further suggest that the king is trying to hide or escape from those who are seeking his downfall.

The repeated phrase "Bow down mortal king / Accept your genocide / The time has come where never gone to" seems to be a demand or challenge to the king, urging him to acknowledge and take responsibility for the atrocities he has committed. The reference to the king's "genocide" suggests that he may have carried out mass killings or other forms of violence against his own people or other groups. The final lines about the rain could represent a sort of cleansing or purging of the king's sins, or perhaps a warning that he will face divine retribution for his actions.

Overall, "The King" is a dark and menacing song that seems to be highlighting the dangers of unchecked power and the need for accountability in political leadership.

The raven has flown and left the tower
And Albion feels all abandoned a desecrated cenotaph
surveillance state and waning choices
Guarded by warriors we knew guided by our ancestral voices

Let flags of black and red unfurl
Echoes of distant laughter
Confederation of the dispossessed
Fearing neither God nor master

Brother of this wretched man
I heed your call never giving in
Watching from his perch bemused
I see him now the spectre of the Raven King
All our lives transformed touched forevermore
All connected all as one

Forever in this moment
Rejecting those who would control us
Touched by a common genius
All bound by fate and common purpose

Killing Joke's last 3 albums, in my opinion, have been some of the best music they've ever put out...and they wouldn't have happened if it weren't for the four original members attending Paul Raven's funeral and, subsequently, reuniting the original band. I hope Paul would be happy about that. RIP Paul Raven - your fingerprints are on so much of the music I listen to today.

Watched the video with tears in my eyes, surprised to see my picture in the collage. Spent a ton of time with Raven while he was with Prong. Treated me like a little brother. A solid individual. A photo signed "your eternal role model" hangs above my desk.

@AcidIceFlows

Heartbreaking and beautiful song. What a great tribute to someone who was obviously very special.

@lordofthemosh

On this day in 2007, Paul Raven, bassist with post-punk band Killing Joke, died of a suspected heart attack aged 46 in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was recording. He left the band in 1987 before forming Murder Inc and joining Ministry, Prong and Mob Research. This song is a fitting tribute to one hell of a musician and the video that you put together is damn near perfect.

The day before we had lunch together in Paris. Paul was on his way to Dieter Meier and Boris Blank's studio in Zurich to work on his new album. It remains an open wound in my heart....

It's extremely sad that this comment is not only old enough to express Raven's death on the same day he died, but to witness Geordie's as well.
Time is a bitch

Brilliant song, brilliant band, criminally under-rated by everyone other than people who know the truth. These guys are like fine fucking wine...they literally got better and better through the years. ONLY the era with Brighter and Outside the Gates can be considered subpar for this band. ALL other albums blaze even though they sound so much different from each other. Killing Joke did shit the right way...they asked no quarter and gave none...they just came out and blazed a trail for 30+ years. THANKS boys for giving us so much awesome music over the years and RIP Paul, you'll never be forgotten by us fans.

@bubbanderson

Kevin W Well said. Not many bands ever got / get close to their level of commitment to a good combo of melody, drama and rock prowess.

@mikesmith9520

Sorry but brighter than a thousand suns a classic too. Everything you say apart I agree my friend

@nealzokan2414

Actually,sir, Brighter and Outside the Gate had some nuance and texture much of their other stuff lacked. Probably over-produced but arguably more comprehensive.Nonetheless a band that I hold in high regard.
