Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ravi Shankar's song Gaayatri are actually a traditional Hindu prayer called the Gayatri Mantra. This mantra is considered one of the most sacred and powerful mantras in Hinduism and is recited by millions of people every day. The Gayatri Mantra is a hymn to the sun and is an invocation to the light and wisdom of the universe. The mantra is chanted with the intention of attaining spiritual enlightenment and a state of pure consciousness.

The first line of the mantra, "Om bhur bhuvaha svaha" is a salutation to the three worlds of existence according to Hinduism – the physical, astral and celestial planes. The second line, "Tat savitur varenyam" is a tribute to the divine light of the sun, which represents knowledge, enlightenment, and spiritual illumination. The third line, "Bhargo devasya dhimahi" is a prayer to the all-pervading God to illuminate our minds and hearts with the divine light of the sun. The last line, "Dhiyo yonah prachodayat" is an appeal to the higher self to provide us with the strength and guidance to reach spiritual truth and enlightenment.

Overall, the Gayatri Mantra is a powerful spiritual tool that can be used to connect with the divine and attain inner peace, wisdom, and understanding.
