As a sophomore in high school, Lenae spent $300 for a studio session that would ultimately produce her first single, "Greetings." Soon after, in 2015, she was featured on Monte Booker’s song, "Baby." Booker and Lenae along with rapper, Smino, formed the original core of the music collective, Zero Fatigue, which was brought together by Chris "Classick" Innumerable at his recording studio, Classick Studios. Lenae's first EP, Moon Shoes, was originally released as a free download in August 2015, but was later reissued by Atlantic Records and the Three Twenty Three Music Group in 2016. It drew praise from critics for her "fluid vocals and spare, poetic lyrics."
In 2016, Lenae was officially signed to Atlantic Records. She also appeared as a featured performer on Mick Jenkins' album The Healing Component and on Noname's song "Forever." She would go on to tour with and open for Noname on her Telefone Tour from January to March 2017. Lenae also performed at WBEZ's Winter Block Party alongside fellow members of the underground collective Medicine Woman: Drea Smith, Via Rosa, and Jean Deau.
She released her second EP Midnight Moonlight on March 3, 2017. Later that month, she performed at SXSW, was featured on Smino's "Glass Flows," and was listed by Rolling Stone as one of "10 New Artists You Need to Know." In the following three months, she would go on to perform at several other festivals, including Mamby on the Beach in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood and Culture Shock in Purchase, New York. Beginning in August 2017, Lenae opened for SZA on her Ctrl Tour. The tour ended in December 2017. On February 9, she released her third EP, entirely produced by Steve Lacy, titled Crush.
On February 1, 2022, she released Skin Tight with Steve Lacy, the first single of her debut album, Hypnos. Following, she released her debut album on May 20, 2022. Featuring vocals and production from Monte Booker, Steve Lacy, KAYTRANAD , Fousheé, Mereba, Smino, Sango, Luke Titus, IAMNOBODI, Phoelix and Teo Halm.

Flavors come, come take over
I can never say I treat you right
I'm your hand of spice
Take me up, shake, shake me up until the mix is right
I won't be nice (nice, nice, nice oh)
I'm your favorite, I'm your favorite
I'm your favorite song (yeah yeah yeah)
Take me, take me where I don't belong
Sweet, salty, spicy, sweet, sweet, salty
Sip me 'til I'm gone
If I heard you cry
Rise and come, come take over
I can never say I treat you nice
(Can't treat you nice, can't treat you nice)
Look me in my eyes (oh oh oh)
Tell you I am wise (oh oh oh)
Love me, love me, love me, my advice
If you know what's right
Baby, baby, never steer you wrong
I'm your favorite, I'm your favorite
I'm your favorite song (yeah yeah yeah)
Take me, take me where I don't belong
Sweet, salty, spicy, sweet, sweet, salty
Sip me 'til I'm gone
Gone, gone, gone, gone
Gone, gone, gone
Gone, gone, gone, gone
Gone, gone, gone
Gone, gone, gone, gone
Gone, gone, gone
Gone, gone, gone, gone
Gone, gone, gone
Sweet and spicy, sweet
Let me tell you something
Sweet and spicy
Let me tell you
Sweet and spicy, sweet
Let me tell you something
Sweet and spicy
Let me tell you
Ah (sweet, salty, spicy, sweet, sweet, salty, salty, sip me) (let me tell you something)
Ah (sweet, salty, spicy, sweet, sweet, salty, salty, sip me) (let me tell you)
Baby, baby, never steer you wrong
I'm your favorite, I'm your favorite
I'm your favorite song
Take me, take me where I don't belong
Sweet, salty, spicy, sweet, sweet, salty
Sip me till I'm gone
Sweet, salty, spicy, sweet, sweet, salty, salty, sip me
Sweet, salty, spicy, sweet, sweet, salty, salty, sip me

In Ravyn Lenae's song "Spice", the lyrics describe a metaphorical connection between the spices in food and the singer's relationship with her lover. The singer states that if her lover "stirs her right," the flavors will come and take over, implying that if he treats her well, their relationship will flourish. However, she admits that she can never say she treats him right, suggesting that their relationship is not always healthy.
The singer then goes on to describe herself as a "hand of spice," asking her lover to take her up and shake her until the mix is right. She asserts that she won't be nice, indicating that she may be difficult to handle in their relationship. The chorus repeats the phrase "I'm your favorite, I'm your favorite, I'm your favorite song," underscoring the idea that their relationship is centered around pleasing each other.
Later on, the singer tells her lover to take her where she doesn't belong and sip her until she's gone. This line suggests a desire to break free from societal norms and expectations and to fully indulge in their relationship. Overall, the song uses powerful food metaphors to describe a complex and perhaps tumultuous relationship, emphasizing the importance of finding the right balance and mix of flavors.
