After his family moved to Austin, Texas in 1944, Campi began a lifetime of performing and recording music in numerous American genres, including folk, country, and rock and roll as well as rockabilly. He rarely concentrated on his musical career exclusively, working a wide variety of jobs, notably twenty-five years spent as a high-school teacher in Glendale, California.
Campi worked with many of the most prominent pioneers of rock and roll music, including Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, and Gene Vincent. He has fiercely criticized the mainstream music industry, in particular its connections with drug culture.
Ray Campi is a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

Don't Come Knockin'
Ray Campi Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't want you 'round no more
No more, 'round me no more
I'll tell you once and I'll tell you twice
I'll find the one that will treat me right
Treat me right
Gonna treat me right
Stole my lovin' gone
I just can't go on
I just can't go on
You don't want me but baby that's all right
I'll find the one that's gonna treat me right
Treat me right,
Gonna treat me right
You, you done me wrong
Took my lovin' gone
I just can't go on
I just can't go on
You don't want me but baby that's all right
I'll find the one that's gonna treat me right
Treat me right,
Gonna treat me right
The lyrics to Ray Campi's song "Don't Come Knockin'" express a feeling of abandonment by a former lover. The singer is rejecting the idea of any kind of reunion with their ex and making it clear that they no longer want them around. The chorus repeats the phrase "I'll find the one that will treat me right" to emphasize the singer's determination to move on and find someone who will treat them better. The verses outline the situation with the ex-lover who has "done me wrong" and "stole my lovin' gone". The repetition of "I just can't go on" serves to emphasize the singer's heartbreak and exhaustion with the situation. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of empowerment as the singer takes control of their own happiness and makes it clear that they will not tolerate being mistreated.
