Over the Rainbow
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Overall Meaning

The song "Over the Rainbow" by Ray Charles, originally from the classic movie "The Wizard of Oz," is a beautiful and powerful tribute to hope and dreams. The first verse speaks of a land far away, beyond the rainbow, that the singer has heard of in a lullaby. The sky is blue and the dreams that one dares to dream do really come true in this land. These lines are about the power of imagination and the hope of achieving something greater, bigger than one's current reality.

In the second verse, the singer talks about "wishing upon a star" and waking up in a place where there are no troubles, where they melt away like lemon drops. Here, the song speaks to the universal human desire for a better life without troubles, struggles or worries. The images of sky and clouds evoke peace, serenity and freedom from pain.

The most poignant part of the song comes in the final refrain, where the singer wonders why they cannot fly like the blue birds that fly beyond the rainbow. This line speaks to the limitations that one faces in life, the obstacles that hold them back from achieving their dreams. Despite the hope and imagination, sometimes one feels stuck, unable to fly.

Overall, the song is about pursuing hope, dreaming big and overcoming limitations. The message of the song is that despite the struggles and hardships of life, one can always have hope and dreams that will take them to a better place.

I was 11 when he died and I know how you feel. When the movie came out, I felt bad he never lived to see Jamie Foxx bring his music to life.

My first time hearing this version of the song, was on my favorite movie Sleepless in Seattle. Hearing Ray's rendition of this song, makes you forget that someone else originally wrote it. He definitely makes it his own. Rest in peace Ray 💕
