Abraham Martin And John
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people, but it seems the good die young, yeah
I just looked around and he was gone

Has anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people, but it seems the good die young, yeah
I just looked around and he was gone

Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people, but it seems the good die young, yeah
I just looked around and he was gone

Has anybody here seen my old friend Marvin?
Can you tell me where his gone, you know?
He freed a lot of people, but the good they die young
I just looked around and he was gone

Yeah

Oh I just looked around they were gone
Oh yeah

Overall Meaning

Ray Charles's song "Abraham Martin And John" is a tribute to four prominent figures in American history who were tragically assassinated. The song is a musical reflection on the loss of these leaders and the impact that their deaths had on American society. The lyrics of the song evoke a sense of mourning and remembrance for these great men.

The first verse of the song is a reference to President Abraham Lincoln, who abolished slavery and fought to preserve the Union during the Civil War. The second verse is a reference to President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963 and is remembered for his leadership during the Cold War and civil rights activism. The third verse is a reference to Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights leader who advocated for racial equality and was assassinated in 1968. The fourth verse is a reference to Marvin Gaye, a singer and songwriter whose music influenced the civil rights movement and whose personal struggles with addiction and mental health led to his untimely death.

The chorus of the song, "Has anybody here seen my old friend / Can you tell me where he's gone / He freed a lot of people / But it seems the good die young," captures the sense of loss and the belief that these men were taken before their time. The repetition of the chorus throughout the song underscores the theme of remembrance and the lasting impact of these leaders on American society.

So much better. M, G'didn't have any feeling. I've heard another one, but it could have been another version Ray Charles? I had a CD of Ray Charles, and I feel as if he sang this w/o any flourishing music. Just him on the piano? Maybe not. I really like Ray Charles! And this one!
