Alone Together
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alone together, beyond the crowd,
Above the world, we're not too proud
To cling together, we're strong
As long as we're together.

Alone together, the blinding rain
The starless night, were not in vain;
For we're together, and what is there
To fear together.

Our love is as deep as the sea,
Our love is as great as a love can be,

And we can weather the great unknown,
If we're alone together.

Overall Meaning

The song Alone Together by Ray Charles and Betty Carter is a poignant and romantic ballad that explores the idea that though the world may seem vast and unknown, when two people are truly in love and united in a strong bond, they can conquer anything together. The opening lines set the scene for the song, where the lovers are alone together, beyond the crowd, and above the world. These lines describe the feelings of two people who have found refuge in each other's company, as they are not too proud to lean on each other for strength.

The second verse of the song brings in the theme of natural obstacles that could stand in the way of the lovers' happiness, such as the blinding rain and the starless night. However, the verses also posit that these obstacles are not in vain, as they enable the couple to realize how much they need each other. The chorus of the song then reinforces the depth of the couple's love, which is as deep as the sea and as great as a love can possibly be. The final lines of the song assert that the couple can weather the unknown and the uncertainties of life, as long as they are together.

Overall, the song Alone Together is a beautiful ode to the power of love and the strength that comes from finding solace in someone else's company. The lyrics are poetic and heartfelt, and are brought to life by the soulful vocals of Ray Charles and Betty Carter.

I was in the military (Army) stationed near Stuggart where one night I improvised Mustang Sally. Later I was asked and did join a band "Blue Spirit". Point is the band was performing at the BLUE NOTE and there I had the great honor of meeting Ms Carter..hilight..she complimented my singing and wished me success.

How did we come to lose this kind of artistry? I doubt anyone can deliver this kind of tone and mood now. It's transfixing.

Betty Carter possessed one of the sweetest voices of all times. The duo truly complimented one another. The subtle side of Ray Charles is as potent as his electrifying rockin' soul recordings....  :)  Composer: (Howard Dietz, Arthur Schwartz)    The Jack Halloran Singers - background vocals  and Marty Paich - arranger, conductor

Don't forget that band and the piano solo of Ray Charles
