Birth of the Blues
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh! they say some people long ago
Were searching for a diff'rent tune
One that they could croon
As only they can

They only had the rhythm so
They started swaying to and fro
They didn't know just what they had
And that is how the blues really began

They heard the breeze in the trees
Singing weird melodies
And they made that
The start of the blues

And from a jail came the wail
Of a down hearted frail
And they played that
As part of the blues

From a whippoorwill out on a hill
They took a new note
Pushed it through a horn
'til it was born into a blue note

And then they nursed it, rehearsed it
And gave out the news

That the southland
Gave birth to the blues!

Overall Meaning

The song "Birth of the Blues" by Ray Charles tells the story of how the blues originated. The lyrics describe how early blues musicians were searching for a new kind of music that they could croon in their own unique way. They found inspiration in the rhythms of the natural world, swaying to and fro to the sound of the breeze in the trees and singing the weird melodies they heard. From there, they took the wailing of a downhearted prisoner in jail and a new note from a whippoorwill on a hill, pushing it through a horn until it was born into the "blue note." The musicians nursed and rehearsed this new sound until they could give out the news that the southland had given birth to the blues.

The song is a celebration of the creative process and the way that musicians drawn on their surroundings and experiences to create something unique and beautiful. It acknowledges the pain and oppression that many of these early blues musicians faced, but also highlights their resilience, ingenuity, and the joy that they found in creating music.

Heavily jazz-influenced music without no singing or the sound of Ray voice just his great piano play was just right for the third song on my song book which eventually I made a class project the teachers didn't even know about or cared but anyway the screaming horns more less ended the story of the date was in which all the songs originated from as the big change came in it almost was like a ending anthem
