Blueberry Hill
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I found my thrill
On Blueberry Hill
On Blueberry Hill
When I found you

The moon stood still
On Blueberry Hill
And lingered until
My dream came true

The wind in the willow played
Love's sweet melody
But all of those vows you made
Were never to be

Though we're apart
You're part of me still
For you were my thrill
On Blueberry Hill

The wind in the willow played
Love's sweet melody
But all of those vows you made
Were never to be

Though we're apart
You're part of me still

For you were my thrill
On Blueberry Hill

Overall Meaning

The song "Blueberry Hill" by Ray Charles is a classic love song that recounts the singer's experience of falling in love on Blueberry Hill. The lyrics describe how the singer found his "thrill" on Blueberry Hill, where the moon stood still and waited for his dreams to come true. The song explores themes of love and heartbreak, as the singer recounts the promises made with his lover that were never fulfilled, and the enduring feelings that remain long after their parting.

The first verse of the song describes the experience of discovering love in the idyllic setting of Blueberry Hill, a location that represents a moment of transformative joy for the singer. The second verse describes the bittersweet aftermath of the relationship's end, as the singer reflects on the promises that were made and the pain of the separation. The final verse brings the song back to its opening theme, emphasizing the enduring nature of the singer's love, even though the relationship has ended.

Blueberry Hill was written by Vincent Rose, Al Lewis, and Larry Stock and was first recorded by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra in 1940. Ray Charles released his version of the song in 1960, which went on to become a significant hit, earning him a Grammy Award for Best Male Performance in 1961. The song has since been covered by a wide range of artists and has become a staple of the American songbook.

My mother has always loved him and especially this song. She is 81 and in her last few hours of life and I have been playing his music for her. The last time she showed any emotions was yesterday when I played this for her. I am thankful he brought so much joy to so many people especially this moment for her.
