Born To Lose
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Born to lose, I've lived my life in vain
Every dream has only brought me pain
All my life I've always been so blue
Born to lose and now I'm losing you

Born to lose, it seems so hard to bear
When I wake and find that you're not there
You've grown tired and now you say we're through
Born to lose and now I'm losing you

Born to lose, I've lived my life in vain
Every dream has only brought me pain
All my life I've always been so blue
Born to lose and now I'm losing you

Born to lose and now I'm losing you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ray Charles's song Born to Lose convey a powerful message of despair and resignation to a fate of constant failure and loss. The singer reflects on his life and realizes that he has always been fated to fail, with every dream he had leading only to pain and disappointment. He is burdened with a sense of melancholy that has been with him throughout his life and now finds himself alone and losing someone he loves. The repetition of the phrase "Born to lose" throughout the lyrics emphasizes the inevitability of his fate and the hopelessness that comes with it.

The chorus of the song repeats the first verse, emphasizing the fact that the singer has been burdened with this sense of hopelessness his whole life, with every dream and every relationship ending in failure. The repetition of the phrase "Born to lose" also underscores the idea that this is not just a temporary setback, but a fundamental aspect of the singer's existence. The final line of the chorus, "Born to lose and now I'm losing you", brings the song to a poignant conclusion, because the singer's sense of defeat and disappointment has now been compounded by the loss of a person he loves.

I was just a very young girl when I heard this lovely song, and I fell in love with it! I am now 87 years old and how I miss this kind of music!! What year did this song get popular?

@kwaobenti

The song is a cover version of the 1942 Ted Daffan song. Ray Charles' version was released in 1962 on his album (Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music), and as a flip side to his single "I Can't Stop Loving You".

No one can top this version of the quintessential Country and Western Blues song. My very favorite by Ray out of so many of his songs that I find EXCEPTIONAL! BTW, Leann Rimes does a nice cover.
