You see see Rider, see what you done done
See see Rider, you see what you done done
You see see Rider, you see what you done done
You done made me love you and now your man done come
My home is on the water, I don't like no land at all
Home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
My home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
I'd rather be dead than to stay here and be your dog
So you see see Rider, see what you done done
See see Rider, you see what you done done
You see see Rider, you see what you done done
You done made me love you and now your man done come
I'm goin' away babe, sure don't want to go
Goin' away babe, but I sure don't want to go
I'm goin' away babe, but I sure don't want to go
When I'm leaving this town you will never see me no more
So you see see Rider, see what you done done
See see Rider, you see what you done done
You see see Rider, you see what you done done
You done made me love you and now your man done come
My home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
Home's on the water and I don't like no land at all

My home's on the water and I don't like no land at all
So goodbye baby I'm tired of being your dog

Overall Meaning

The song "C C Rider" by Ray Charles is a classic blues number with a strong theme of heartbreak and betrayal. The lyrics are directed towards an unfaithful lover, who the singer refers to as "see see Rider". The repetition of this phrase suggests that the singer is trying to drive the point home, that the lover should take a hard look at what they have done. The singer blames the lover for making him fall in love, only for her man to come and ruin things.

The second half of the song sees the singer expressing his desire to leave the woman and the town. He is so angered by her betrayal that he would rather die than stay and remain a "dog" to her. The refrain is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the idea that the singer is taking a stand against the hurtful actions of "see see Rider".

About 20 years ago my wife and I went to New Orleans for Mardi-Gras. We went to a place on Bourbon Street where the music was all Blues, (House of Blues). What an amazing experience. I asked the group if they knew See See Rider. They did and they played it for me. It was wonderul. It brought back memories of Ray Charles.

In Ray's autobiography, it says two versions of this song, C. C. Rider, exist: The original with just Ray doing it, and another (heard here) where some nameless entrepreneur laid on choral and organ tracks over Ray's original song.

Why don't I get these lyrics when I google this song. I have this version on my phone. Thought I was going crazy. Like I had a rare recording or something.

I love this song.

Does anyone know? Did they take his early recordings like this one & then overdub the background vocals/strings onto them? I have heard versions by Ray Charles without the background vocals.
