Chattanooga Choo Choo
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pardon me boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?
Track twenty nine, boy you can gimme a shine
I can afford to board a Chattanooga Choo Choo
I've got my fare and just a trifle to spare

You leave the Pennsylvania station 'bout a quarter to four
Read a magazine and then you're in Baltimore
Dinner in the diner, nothing could be finer
Than to have your ham 'n' eggs in Carolina

When you hear the whistle blowin' eight to the bar
Then you know that Tennessee is not very far
Shovel all the coal in, gotta keep it rollin'
Woo, woo, Chattanooga, there you are

There's gonna be a certain party at the station

Satin and lace, I used to call funny face
She's gonna cry until I tell her that I'll never roam

The man had so much charisma. Thank you Ray! And thanks for posting.

@BIGERNMcCrack

I really love this version.  Ray's voice and charisma just carry so well with the tune and I wish I could go back in time to see him play live.  Sigh.

@BIGERNMcCrack

Simply the best version and arrangement of this song.

@BradWest96

I agree, I had to come here after listening to the Glenn Miller arrangement. (Great version, but the vocals do not come close to Ray!)

@TaichiStraightlife

Best version of this song... really brings you into the picture (though I cringed at, "Boy, you can give me a shine"). While listening to this I can really imagine a time when everyone traveled long distance to anywhere by overnight train. Great orchestra too!
