Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do I ever cross your mind
Darlin' do you ever see
Some situation somewhere, somehow
Triggers your memory
And do you ever wonder
What became of all the time
And darlin' do I ever, ever cross your mind
Do you ever want to know
If all dreams go on endlessly
Or do they just run down
Somehow and gradually become
The custody of that melancholy jailer father time
And darlin' do I ever, ever cross your mind
Do I ever cross your mind
uninvited - when you're lonely
Or does that only, only happen to me
And don't you ever wonder
What became of all the time
And darlin' do I ever, ever cross your mind

Do I ever cross your mind
Uninvited when you're lonely
Or does that only, only happen to me
And don't you ever wonder
What became of all the time

And darlin' do I ever, ever cross your mind
And darlin' do I ever, ever cross your mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ray Charles's song "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?" explore the theme of reminiscence and the fear of being forgotten. The song suggests that the singer is contemplating whether or not they are still on their lover's mind. They wonder if their lover ever thinks of them when they see certain situations that could trigger a memory of them. The singer also questions if their lover ever wonders where the time has gone and if their dreams will last forever. They are left feeling lonely and questioning if their lover ever thinks of them.

The song reflects the classic themes of soul and R&B music, such as lost love, regret, and loneliness. The references to time and dreams evoke a sense of longing for the past and uncertainty about the future. This feeling of uncertainty is further reflected in the phrase "uninvited when you're lonely," which suggests that the singer may feel like a burden to their lover. Overall, the song is a beautiful portrayal of the human experience and how people cope with feelings of loneliness and fear of being forgotten.

My Dad used to sing this song to my mom, my Dad was a very romantic man!!! I miss seeing my dad showing love to my mom every single day. This song brings me the most beautiful memories of my childhood. Thanks for the romantic music Ray Charles!

How could one song be so perfect?

@prahseguod

Back around Feb 2005 my mom was living in Florida and had a heart attack. I was working at a jobsite in Big Stone Gap Va. I was sitting in my car eating lunch and trying to stay warm. I had a CD playing when my sister called to let me know, and it was this song. I drove straight from work to Jacksonville without going home. I had not played that CD again until yesterday on my way to Miss. I just stuck a CD holder with a bunch of old CDs in the truck as I was leaving. I'm glad I did.
