Driftin' Blues
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I'm drifting and drifting,
Like a ship out on the sea.
Well I'm drifting and drifting,
Like a ship out on the sea.
Well I ain't got nobody
In this world to care for me.

If my baby would only take me back again
If my baby would only take me back again.
Well you know I ain't good for nothin' baby

Well I haven't got no friends.

I give you all of my money,
Tell me what more can I do.
I give you all my money,
Tell me what more can I do.
Well you just a good little girl
But you just won't be true.

Bye-bye baby, baby bye-bye bye-bye,

It's gonna be too late baby
I'll be so far away.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ray Charles's song "Driftin' Blues" convey the feeling of being lost and alone. Through the imagery of a ship drifting out at sea, the singer expresses a sense of aimlessness and uncertainty in his life. He repeats the phrase "Well I'm drifting and drifting," creating a sense of endlessness, as if he is trapped in a cycle of drifting with no end in sight. The repetition of this phrase also emphasizes the lack of direction in his life.

The song suggests that the singer's loneliness is due to a failed relationship. He sings, "Well I ain't got nobody in this world to care for me." He longs for his lover to take him back, but he also acknowledges that he is not good for anything. He further laments his situation, saying that he hasn't got any friends. The lyrics create an image of a man who feels isolated and disconnected from everyone around him.

The song ends with the repetition of the phrase "bye-bye baby, baby bye-bye," followed by the singer's declaration that it is going to be too late to come back to him. The final line, "I'll be so far away," emphasizes the singer's sense of detachment from the world around him, as if he is drifting even farther away from everything he knows.

Ray's version is so SOULFUL.

Neal Luczkiewicz

I have loved this song since I first heard it in the early 70's. I found it for sale in vinyl in a discount record bin at a Woolworth's in upstate New York, and knew I had a treasure. The color of this tune is wistfulness, regret, lonliness that is somehow handled and held in the bosom of the blues. The vocal and the piano are very strong and expressive. At the end of the statement, the hero throws up his hands, but remains strong, standing till the last note.
