Georgia
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Georgia, Georgia,
The whole day through
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
(Georgia on my mind)

I′m say Georgia
Georgia
A song of you
(A song of you)
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

I said Georgia,
Ooh Georgia, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

Georgia,
Georgia,
No peace, no peace I find
Just this old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

I said just an old sweet song,
Keeps Georgia on my mind

Overall Meaning

The song "Georgia on My Mind" by Ray Charles is a beautiful tribute to the state of Georgia. The song opens with the repetition of "Georgia" twice, followed by "The whole day through, just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind." The lyrics are expressing the idea that a simple melody can hold such powerful memories of a place, and those memories can persist long after leaving. The chorus repeats the sentiment with "Other arms reach out to me, other eyes smile tenderly, still, in peaceful dreams, I see the road leads back to you." This suggests that while the singer may be physically somewhere else, they still feel a strong pull towards Georgia.

As the song progresses, the singer goes on to describe the beauty of Georgia, comparing it to "moonlight through the pines." The second verse is where we get a hint of melancholy, as the singer speaks of not finding peace elsewhere, but instead the same old sweet song of Georgia continues to come to mind. The final verse simply states that "No peace, no peace I find, just this old, sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind."

The interpretation of this song has taken on multiple meanings over the years. Some listeners see it as a love song to a person who represents Georgia, while others view it as a love song to the state itself. In the end, the lyrics convey a deep sense of longing and nostalgia for a place that holds a special significance.

My beloved mother is 89 and has Alzheimer's. Every time I play this for her, she says, "why does he keep calling me?"
Other times when he says her name, Georgia, she says "yes yes yes. Here I am".

Today she's whispering, "this is for me, isn't it.... Shhhhh". She's smiling and blushing as we play this 4 more tines. 🤗💖
