Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, good lookin', what you got cookin'
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me
Hey, sweet baby, don't you think maybe
We could find us a brand new recipe

I got a brand new car and a two dollar bill
Yeah, I know a spot right over the hill
There's soda pop and the dancin's free
So, if you wanna have fun, come along with me

So hey, good lookin', what you got cookin'
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me

I got a brand new Ford and a two dollar bill
Alright, I know a spot right over the hill
There's soda pop and the dancin's free
So, if you wanna have fun, come along with me

So hey, good lookin', what you got cookin'

How's about cookin' somethin' up with me
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me

Overall Meaning

Ray Charles's "Hey Good Lookin'" is a song that conveys a playful flirtation between two people. The singer starts by complimenting the other person, asking them what they've got cooking and suggesting that they cook something together. The implication is that they'll not only be working together but also spending more time with one another. He then suggests that they could come up with a new recipe together, an attraction building as they start to connect on a deeper level.

The next two verses are packed with details that outline his plan. He describes his brand new car and two dollar bill, bragging about his wealth, and then attempts to impress the other person with his knowledge of a "spot right over the hill" with free soda pop and dancing. All of this is an invitation to the other person to join him and have fun together. The repetition of the chorus throughout the song emphasizes the flirtatious energy and the catchy melody made it a hit.

In conclusion, "Hey Good Lookin'" is an example of Ray Charles's ability to blend different genres, in this case mixing country with R&B, creating a unique sound. The song employs upbeat instrumentation with simple, witty lyrics, showcasing Ray Charles's distinctive style.

It is curious that many black artists dared to sing country songs and nobody accused them of "stealing" or cultural appropriation, but if a white singer sings songs by black artists they are immediately accused of a thief. double standards and stupidity

Ingwë Vanyarin

I agree that accusing white musicians of cultural appropriation for playing black forms is ridiculous. The idea in the heads of those that do it is that country is in part influenced by black music. figures that invented country as we know it like jimmie rogers, maybelle carter, and bill monroe all had black musicians as mentors in their formative years. On the other hand, white artists performing old blues and black gospel are playing a style that white folks had no hand in influencing. If only people could know the history without accusing. I love many black renditions of country and many white renditions of blues and gospel!
