Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more
What'd you say?

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more

Oh woman, oh woman, don't treat me so mean
You're the meanest old woman that I've ever have seen
I guess if you say so
I'll have to pack my things and go (that's right)

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more
What'd you say?

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more

Now baby, listen baby, don't you treat me this way
'Cause I'll be back on my feet some day
Don't care if you do, 'cause it's understood
You ain't got no money, you just ain't no good
Well, I guess if you say so
I'll have to pack my things and go (that's right)

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more
What'd you say?

Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more, no more, no more, no more
Hit the road Jack and don't you come back
No more

Well (don't you come back no more)
Uh, what you say? (don't you come back no more)
I didn't understand you (don't you come back no more)
You can't mean that (don't you come back no more)
Oh now baby please (don't you come back no more)

What you tryin' to do to me? (don't you come back no more)
Oh, don't treat me like that, baby (don't you come back no more)

Overall Meaning

"Hit the Road Jack" by Ray Charles is a song about a man who is being kicked out of his house by his "mean old woman". He takes this news rather pragmatically and accepts his eviction, preferring to "pack his things and go" rather than cause a scene. The chorus, "Hit the road Jack and don't you come back, no more, no more, no more, no more" is repeated multiple times and emphasizes that he is not welcome to return.

The man argues that he will someday return stronger and better than ever, but the woman dismisses him as not being any good, with no money to his name. The man pleads with the woman not to treat him poorly, but ultimately has to accept the situation and leave.

The tone of the song is somewhat playful and upbeat, despite the melancholic subject matter. Ray Charles is famous for his ability to blend different genres, and "Hit the Road Jack" is no exception, with elements of R&B and jazz infused throughout the piece.

100% Facts, the 1900’s music is bomb! Now music is either extremely inappropriate or really annoying, or like techno music, lots of rapping (rapping is great ngl), and there’s also like these pop songs that are okay, but like- 1900’s music hits different.
