Honey Honey
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I got misery, oh my where are you, honey
Honey, oh honey honey, where can you be
Whisperin' when the lights are low, to each
Teardrop on my pillow
Honey honey, honey honey, where are you
I crossed the scalds in dessert, just to be where
You are
I want you need you love you, but still we're apart
When I want to hold you, oh my where are you
Honey honey, my honey honey, where can you be

When I want to hold you, oh my where are you
Honey honey, my honey honey, where can you be

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of Ray Charles's song Honey Honey express feelings of longing and helplessness. The singer is clearly feeling miserable and seeking comfort from a loved one, but is unable to find them. The repetition of the phrase "honey honey" indicates that this person is someone very important to the singer, and we get a sense of how desperately he needs their presence in his life. The line "Whisperin' when the lights are low, to each" suggests that the singer and his love share intimate moments together in the dark, which only adds to his sense of loss when they are not around. The teardrop on his pillow is a poignant image of his sadness and loneliness.

The second half of the song reveals that the singer has gone to great lengths to try and find his love, even crossing a desert ("I crossed the scalds in dessert, just to be where/ You are"). Despite this effort, he is still unable to be with them and his longing only intensifies. The repetition of the phrase "Honey honey, my honey honey, where can you be" at the end drives home the sense of desperation and longing that the singer is feeling.

Overall, the lyrics of Honey Honey are a poignant expression of love and loss, and Ray Charles's soulful vocals bring an added depth of emotion to the song.

Ray Charles blues recordings must be the most underestimated blues material ever. Seems like very few knew that he was a great blues pianoplayer. He's way of playing the blues is very unique and different from other blues pianoplayers.
