I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town
Ray Charles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm gonna move baby, way out on the outskirts of town
I'm gonna move baby, way out on the outskirts of town
You see I don't need no-body, always hangin' 'round

Let me tell you honey, we gonna move away from here
I don't need no iceman, I'm gonna, get you a Frigidaire
When we move, way out on the outskirts of town
Whoa, you see we won't need no-body, always hangin' 'round

It may seem funny honey, funny as can be
If we have a dozen children, you know they AW-LL-all better look like me
When we move, way back 'a town
Whoa-oh-oh-oh, we won't need no-body, always hanging around

We don't need nobody baby, AW-LL-always hanging 'round

Hangin' 'round
Hangin' 'round

Overall Meaning

In this song, Ray Charles expresses his desire to move to the outskirts of town with his lover because he is tired of people always hanging around. He repeatedly emphasizes his need for privacy and independence from individuals who cling to him. The move to the outskirts of town seems to be a symbolic representation of a new start, one where he and his lover can be themselves and not worry about others interfering in their personal lives. The idea of starting anew is embodied in their decision to buy a Frigidaire instead of relying on an iceman for cold drinks. The solo in the middle of the song is the keyboardist displaying his talents before Charles repeats his message about moving away from town to the ends of the city where people won't loiter and overlook their lives. The song finishes with the repetition of the phrase "hanging around" once more, suggesting that he had been dealing with people intruding his life for an extended period.

Famous cut from one of his early albums, now unavailable. Luckily, I have it. Backed by some of the Basie band.

There are over a dozen versions of this song from 1936 to 2008 according to Wikipedia. But this version had me nodding my head and popping my fingers while the Soprano's end credits rolled and where I first heard it.

I listened to this and others on the album way back in the 60's. It only gets better with age. I miss Ray. Thanks for posting.
